Master of Faster
Hey guys, I'm having a problem with my Banshee pushing gear oil up through the overflow when I'm running it hard. A couple weeks ago I noticed my oil turning milky so I did the obvious thing and put in a new waterpump seal and made sure everything was sealed up tight. Well last trip out with fresh oil to start it started pushing oil out the overflow, I checked the oil and its milky again, I'm thinking possibly the right side crank seal is leaking which is pressurizing the crankcase and the fuel/oil is turning the gear lube milky. What do you guys think?

Master of Faster
No it doesn't appear to be. I didn't have any excessive smoke from that side.

DUNE-A-TIC
What are you referring to as the overflow, the radiator overflow? Dune
Master of Faster
No, not the coolant over flow. The oil is actually pushing through the crankcase vent. There is the tube that is at the back/top of the cases and there is also the tube that hooks into the case behind the water pump cover, they "T" together above the carbs and then the line runs up over top of the steering hoop. Oil is pushing all the way through there and then dumping out on my pipe. I know absolutely that it is not the coolant over flow as I have that run underneath the quad and also I haven't been losing any coolant at all. dajogejr
You didn't put too much tranny fluid in, by chance...did you? It's about 1.7 quarts of fluid or so... Since you're in mid-michigan, stop by and see Bob at R&B racing. He sells a leakdown tester. All you gotta do is take your pipes and carbs off and test for a leak. If a crank seal is leaking, the tester will show a drop in pressure... Bob's in the Saginaw area, helluva nice guy to boot. You can PM here, his name is machwon. Good luck... Sounds like the way to go.Every crank seal problem i've had has always put gear oil in the cylinder and smoked more. I may be a lil rusty but don't recall anything down there that would milk the fluid or cause excessive pressure other than anything obvious. hmmmmmmmmmm..i'll get back w/ya Dune
DaFish
i think i recall somewhere on this site someone saying, that if you oil is milky that means your clutch is going out. not sure it thats true or not but thats just what someone said. KlotzBanshee
If your oil is milky looking it's from coolant or water getting into your case. Check your head and base gaskets and re- torque to specs. Also possible warpage? good luck
Master of Faster
hhhhmmmm, I've smoked my share of clutches before and none of them have made the oil milky. Typically when you have a milky white oil its water but I just put a brand new waterpump seal in it, and I checked the o-ring where the side case seals and sealed it with silicone also. At the same time the thing seemed to be running great and no excessive smoking. I guess I will have to get a leakdown tester to find out for sure. If your oil is milky looking it's from coolant or water getting into your case. Check your head and base gaskets and re- torque to specs. Also possible warpage? good luck It has a new head gasket in it from about a month ago because it was pushing water out the overflow, however that was with a cheap aftermarket gasket, haven't had a problem since I put a good oem gasket back in it. I don't understand how water would get into the gearcase from a bad base gasket or head gasket though since the crankcase is seperate from the gearcase. dajogejr
Metal shavings? Yes. Milky? no. Yeah, I have a home made tester that doesn't work for crap, and pieced it together just as Bob was selling his kit. I think it would've cost me 10 bucks more than what I pieced together...but his will work. I'm gonna pick one up from him one of these days...(I'm hoping from all the referrals, he'll just send me one...ha ha...J/K Bob)... I'll just wait by the mailbox for my Christmas card, though... Bob bought my OEM Cylinders (virgin, non-bored) and stock crank from me. Good guy to talk to, very quick to respond and professional.
Master of Faster
Yeah, I think I'll just buy one rather than piece my own together and wonder if my results are inaccurate or if my tester is junk, thanks.
