ive seen the gps for cars and such, but something tells me they wouldnt last too long in the dirty and somtimes wet conditions which a quad operates.

im wondering if there is a gps more taylored to quads?

I use a Garmin eTrex Legend with optional handle bar mount. Only problem I've had in 2+ years is on some hard hits the batteries will shake and it'll turn off. Easily fixed by wrapping the batt's in tape.

Here's mine: Etrex Legend

and the mount: handlebar mount w/ waterproof battery cover

When it comes to weather, I've only used it in a steady rain. I ride sand and tend to avoid wet conditions like the plague. The unit is waterproof except for the battery compartment. The handlebar mount comes with a new cover for the batteries that has an o-ring to increase the water resistance of the batt compartment. So it shouldn't be a problem dealing with splashes and such, dunno if I'd submerge it though.

I've used a Garmin V and a III+ for seven years now on both my quads and snowmobiles. It is only grayscale but it has taken all the punishment I have dished out.

i appreciate the responses guys. im probably going to grab an etrex with the colour display. with the large ammount of trails i ride, i get lost often enough running new trails that i think a gps would be worth it. besides, i think it would be just plain cool to be able to tell my elevation, speed, and how many miles ive gone.

if you just want a normal gps like a hiker used the Magellan and Garmin are pretty good . we used them in iraq all the time, didnt even use the military pluggers ( big gps ) they where actually closer to the point on the earth then the pluggers came close to. only down fall is they dont mount to your bike you got to either rig a mount or pocket them.

I have the Rhino 130... good GPS, no color screen the color Rhino models are a rip off IMO.... pretty tough... the 2-way radio that it comes with is kinda a joke but sorta works.... only issue I had was the handlebar mount that I purchased from garmin sucked pretty good... I lost my first 130 because the bar mount was a POS. Now I just clip it to my camel back and it works good... its a little spendy but has a ton of features.

Another vote for Garmin E-Trex. Dialitic (spelled wrong I'm sure) grease on ends of batteries. Can get it at any auto-zone. I use it on all electrical connections and on spark-plug cap too. Helps water-proof and on the batteries it helps keep from getting carbon tracking at the terminals, from the batteries bouncing. (Carbon tracking is that black stuff, like on you slot-car track, that you had to clean off with pencil eraser and rubbing alcahol.) :geek:
