Sputtering at WOT

What are some causes WOT sputtering? Only seems to happen at WOT.

I think there is a small chance I had an air leak where the crossover tube meets the intake? could that do it? I know my jetting is still rich, could that alone be the only problem.

I tried jetting the mains everywhere from 165 down to 140 & its still rich looking at the plugs, but its got this sputtering that wouldnt go away

my setup is .030 over drag ported 350, 165PSI compression(cold) I'm at somewhere around 500ft above sealevel, cpi inframes, 35mm Keihin airstrikers, V force3, +4 timing, lightend flywheel, 104 octane

An air leak would cause it to be lean. Are you looking at the tip of the insulator, or doing a proper plug chop.

How do the reeds look?

PM Machwon on here, he can sell you a leak down tester which will tell you if you have any air leaks....

Drag port and your other mods, I'd say you're in the right ballpark for you jetting. Try new plugs?

What kind of plugs? How much oil you running in the premix?

I fought that problem for a year with mine. It would pull fine, then feel like it had a rev limiter. I tried every jet combo, different carbs, etc. It was my stator.

Yep...checking electrical was next. Much more of a bitch to check than the simple stuff...though!!

reeds look fine

oil is 32.1 yamahalube (should I try 40.1)

I'm using NGK B8ES I tried new plugs, the whole plug is dark & wet.

When I pulled the carbs there is even a little puddle of fuel in the intakes.

The ignition was my next idea, but it ran fine last weekend b4 I put the ported jugs on

Yep...ohm it out according to the manual or a Clymers book. I don't know the numbers off the top of my head, or which leads to test.

However....I've heard of Stators being bad even though they ohm'd good.

I'd check the ignition coil per the Clymer manual directions also, just to rule it out. But then again my experience with a bad ignition coil is sputtering anytime the engine has a load on it, not just at WOT. It seems odd that it did this only after the new jugs, but it's probably coincidental. Good Luck!

mine did the same thing at WOT. my coil ended up being junk, but it sounds like youre pretty rich too. wonder if when u did the WOT plug check if your weak spark isnt burning all the fuel off causing your plugs to look wet and dark??

I have one if not two (don't remember) stock coils if you'd like to try one.

You pay for the ride, and on your honor...flip me a 20 if you keep it, send it back if it doesn't make a difference.

No hurry on the cash...I'd rather a fellow member and rider put it to use than have it be a dust collector...

PM me if you're interested.

thats kinda what I was thinkning since I tried such a broad range of jets & they all ran the same, the only time it bogged alot was with the 165 jets, all the smaller jets would only bog in 6th. But the plugs looked bad everytime I pulled them & the intakes had fuel puddling everytime i pulled the carbs.

what should I try replacing first the coil or the stator?

Both coils will be on the way for you tomorrow, Sam.

My stocker, one a friend gave to me. I was having a ton of problems with my cub build, so I decided to buy ALL new ignition. My brand new Nology does the job, so I keep spares.

Both of these coils and my Nology coil didn't change how it ran, (Ended up being a crank seal blown from sucking water) and these should both be fine...

Good luck!!

DJ
