MI Riding spots?

Recommended Posts

My friends and I want to go on one more trip for this summer, and we were thinking of going back to Baldwin, the trails there are pretty fun, there's about 100miles of them. But we've already gone there once this summer, and we're sorta thinkin about Silver Lake... but are there any other good parks/spots to ride other than those 2? We're starting from SW Michigan, between Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids, and dont want to drive TOO far.. but any good suggestions?

There are plenty of ride spots that are relatively close. You can look at the michigan.gov site and check out the state operated ones like silver lake but there are a few like the badlands in attica Indiana or The land between the lakes (missouri) if you wanna drive for a few hours. The Hatfield McCoy trail extends from Virginia all of the way thru Alabama

Dude...you're in Kalamazoo....

You're an hour or so from Silver Lake MI dunes.

How much better can you get than that...

If you wanna ride some good trails, head up by Cadillac to the peacock trail system. That's not too far of a drive for you...those trails are excellent. Nice, open, 4th and 5th gear trails....

What all would I need to get into Silver Lake.. after reading some stuff about it, they sound like real tight-asses about what gets in and what doesnt, and vouchers, and all kinds of other crap... I have FMF pipes, with I believe FMF silencers... would that even pass their sound/emissions tests and such? They say 94db's is the limit, 20inches from the end of the silencer. And do FMF silencers the proper spark arresters??? Also where can I get a flag pole/flag that meets their size req.'s... Also, if anyone could tell me how the admission thing works, that would be great!

1 more question... how fun do you think it would be with only a set of razr's on, instead of paddles..?

You can get a flag at the dune store next door probably and appletree buggy is across the street. Or just a bike flag from wal-mart. It has to hit an overhead pole as you drive under it. As far as the vouchers go, you just get a voucher at least a day in advance unless you are at the nearby cmpground. Its not legal to ride your quad in but alot of people do. Vouchers are for parking space in the parking lot. As far as sound emissions go as long as you have a usfs approved spark arrestor on your exhaust they pretty much let you go unchecked. there is a guy at the entrance booth with a decimeter so just keeps your revs low as you pass.

Few things...Don't buy a bike flag pole. You can get one just about anywhere in the area. You can't just go and get a parking lot voucher the day before. You don't need them for Friday, but you can get Saturdays between 9 and 10 friday night, and Sundays same time Saturday night. Otherwise you can get them the day of DEPENDING ON AVAILABILITY. If it is a busy weekend, take the time to end your duning day a hair early and get your vouchers the night before.

They will be checking sound on the weekend. They do this randomly, they don't just pick out the loud ones. I have seen them check stock 300EX's this year. I used to run FMF Fatty's w/ power core 2 silencers and sparky universal spark arrestors. I would pass the sound test every time, barely. Unless you have the silencers w/spark arrestors, you will need some universals. I actually have my old set you can have for $75 shipped if you need em. Shit, you could pick em up if you decided you need them last minute.

You will need to pay for a day pass state park($7 i think) and an ORV for each vehicle actually going in the Dunes($16 I think).

It sounds like a pain, but if you are legal, and get your vouchers, it is really no trouble. Definately worth the effort. Any other questions, just let me know. Oh, and I would definately look at getting a set of paddles. Not necessary, but almost needed.

Are you talking about the Land Between the Lakes (LBL) near Paducah, Kentucky or about 90 miles North of Nashville along I-24?:

Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area - Turkey Bay OHV Area

I take the waverunner down there and play once in a while. Locals around here call it "Kentucky Lake" even though there are technically two lakes and more.

It is a pretty unique place because of the way it originated, but the closest point of LBL is at least 50 miles from Missouri... :-)

--- EDIT BELOW THIS LINE ---

If you are going to go that far from Michigan you went right past Little Egypt in Southern Illinois:

Dajoge, that is my home. Best friend has a cabin there and this has been the worst year ever for sound. I have been there 5 weekends and a holiday week, and they were checking sound every weekend, only on Saturday and Sunday. The rail guys are pissed that have been there forever. Anything w/a turbo is failing unless you put a monster flowmaster or some sort of big bulky muffler. They are even turning the long travels away. Just think how happy it would make you if you were from around this area, spent $75,000 on a car, get turned away for sound, where else do you drive it?

As bummed as I am about it, as my Banshee w/CPI inframes w/brand new packing fails miserably(106db) they are actually a hair lenient. State law says 94, they will let you get away w/98.

Well...how times have changed. We were there early this year, and they checked for spark and flag, not a single person for sound.

That sucks...big time.

I'm sure my RDZ's are on par with your CPIs for sound. Looks like I'll be repacking them somehow...great.

Do people still put their quads in the back of the trucks to get into the gates?

My shit is done, and I'm DYING to ride it there. My buddy is mid-process of building his monster 4 stroke Honda. Maybe we'll come up on a Wednesday night and ride Thursday and Friday. If they turn us away Saturday...we come home....

Quad in the back of the truck works still. I have never seen them make someone start one up to check it. Also, it is pretty easy to get around. I wait till they pull someone over to check them, then drive right on up to the gate. But as soon as they are done w/that person, they grab someone else. So really it is pretty easy to play their game. I have been turned away before, went and took a 2hr lunch and tune session, and they waved me right through the next time and my quad is definately unique looking.
