I'm new to two-strokes, and I'm fairly new to ATV's... I have a list of questions that I need answered, cuz i'm lost around HQ.

As much as a n00b I'm gonna sound like, here goes:

A.What are reeds?

B.What is porting?

C.What are domes?

D.What's T.O.R.S?

E.What does the whole +2 or +1 or + mean?

F.What does a jet kit do?

and finally

G.What is jetting?

A. Reeds are equivalent to valves on a four stroke. They let your air fuel mixture go into the cylinders and also down to the crankshaft and connecting rods, so they can get lubed up since teo strokes don't have crankcase oil.

B. Porting is done to the intake and exhaust port of your cylinders. If you look at a stock cylinder one the intake and exhaust ports they are all roughed up and nasty looking. So they take a dremel tool or something close and smooth out the surfaces and also make the ports biggest for better and smoother flow. this is like one of the highest H.P. gains you can get.

C. Domes are what go inside of your head. They look this little UFOs and those control the size of you combustion chamber and psi. I think stock is 21 or 22 cc domes but once you start modding you shee and can't stop, your gunna get a cool head, and what that does is give you more to for coolant and also allow you to be able to swap your dome and either dorp down some sizes and raise your psi and get more power( but if you are running anything over 150psi you have to start running race gas, and that cost lots of money). You raise your psi but putting in smaller domes like got to 17cc or 19cc domes.

D. T.O.R.S. is Throttle Override something system= pain in your ass. Get rid of them asap, all the do is if you crash and your throttle gets stuck wide open it shuts off your shee. They cause lots of problems for your shee to, so just get rid of them. O and they are those big ass things on the top of your carbs.

E. +2+1 refers to front suspention. The first number is how much wider on each side you a-arms are going to be, and the second is much they are going to foreward to give a longer wheelbase. overall it gives to a better stance and then you get to have some kick ass aftermarket shocks that feel like your floating on air when you ride.

F. Jet kit is comes with new needles and a varity of new jet to tune in your carbs so youe shee will run sweet.

G. Go to the jetting and exhaust forum and look at the top in the pinned section and theres couple and pages and really detailed jetting.

Well that about sums it up so good luck and if you have anymore questions lets us know.

And to all you more knowledgeable guys out there if im wrong or left anything out, please correct me.

Matt

I'm new to two-strokes, and I'm fairly new to ATV's... I have a list of questions that I need answered, cuz i'm lost around HQ.

As much as a n00b I'm gonna sound like, here goes:

A.What are reeds?

reeds are small flaps of typically either metal, plastic, rubber, carbon fiber, or a combination of the afore mentioned. they are attached to a to a hollow triangular block and act as a check valve to basically keep the compressed air/fuel mix from forcing it's way backwards through the intake system.

B.What is porting?

porting is the act of enlarging or modifying the intake & exhaust openings and or the small pockets or cavities(ie. ports) along the inner walls of the cylinder in order to improve prefomance.

C.What are domes?

domes can either refer to the concave inner surface of the stock cylinder head cap where the compression is made or it can refer to the inter-changable concave insert used by many aftermarket companies in their replacement performace cylinder head caps to allow adjustable compression ratios.

D.What's T.O.R.S?

T.O.R.S.= Throttle Over-Ride System. it is basically an emergency electronic killswitch with senser switches in the the parking brake switch, thumb throttle housing, and both carb caps that in case of a stuck open throttle/carb, by letting off the throttle fully, the TORS module will kill the electrical system and stop the bike.

E.What does the whole +2 or +1 or + mean?

the +2 or +1 generally refers to any part that is longer, wider or relocated from a stock position. in the case of a +2 axle that would mean that it is 2" wide that a stock axle would be giving more stability. or like in the case of A-arms a set of +2+1 arms would mean that they 2" wider from stock moving the wheels 2" farther out from the frame while the +1 is moving the spindles the wheels mount to 1" farther forward thus making the front end wider and a longer wheel base( distance between front and rear wheels) basically making more stability.

F.What does a jet kit do?

a jet kit is an an assortment of different size brass fittings(jets) and needles used to adjust and regulate the amount and flow of air and fuel that mix together as it passes through the carb.

and finally

G.What is jetting?

the system of metering and controlling the amounts of air and fuel mixing to cause the proper level of combustion in the cylinder.

since your new to 2 strokes and to ATV's in general, do your self a favor and invest in a Clymer's Repair manual for it. it is like the Banshee Bible and many of the others on here will swear by it. it is the best reference book you can ever get and basically anyone with average skill with tools and the book can use it to do most repairs themselves.

Thanks alot everyone, really helps.

And to sredish, I mostly ride out at the Boondoxx, and occasionally Munster, I'm hoping to check out the new North Texas MX. sounds scary enough... Although right now I'm in between ATV's...My warrior is gone so right now I have my TTR-125, barely enough power to get me off the couch. My banshee will present itself soon and I'll go riding as much as I can before school starts back up.
