alcohol and crank

How hard is it to convert a banshee from race gas to methanol, and how much of a stroker crank can i put in the cases before i have to trench them, and how exactly do they trench them?

 

The switch is fairly simple. Basically just carbs. Possilby a Pingel or some other type of high flow petcock. Warm up time will be longer and your engine should run considerably cooler.

Just remember to purge your engine if its going to sit for a while. The alcohol is hard on seals.

I have been considering the alchy conversion myself. So you need to change the tank and the petcock as well? Maybe a IMS tank and pingry dual? Do you need to run different fuel lines? Do you need to run Top Lube along with the 2stroke oil?

 

The reason I want to do the conversion is because they are alot less sensative to jetting on alchy from what I hear. Is this correct? Are they harder to start on the sauce?

 

You'll want to Ideally run a little more compression w/alky also. The alky will attract moisture so is hard on your metal parts as well, just need to make sure you purge well. Will also need a new fuel tank.

 

 

What about your timing setting and pluggs as well?

They are harder to start because you have to purge them with race gas when you are done riding for a while, it makes them difficult to start. Higher compression is needed from my understanding, to really take advantage of it. Timing I'm not sure on, I think you pretty much leave it where its at, but not sure. I never heard the new fuel tank thing. Just clean the one you have. You might need a bigger tank, since you will use a lot more alcohol to go the same distance you would on gas. I will be going to a 5gal tank or soemthing there abouts when I switch. But I also have filling stations scattered throughout the dunes I ride on. Ha Ha! You will need a pingel and dual fuel lines to make sure you don't suck your bowls dry. I am going to put a fuel pump on mine as well, one that runs off the intake pulses. You will need to run a premix oil that works with the alcohol. I believe castor 927 works with it, but I'd have to do some research and be sure.

Higher than stock compression, yes...but, if you already have a shaved head or custom head...you don't need more compression for alky...

 

As far as the tank, you don't need a new one. The factory plastic is better than anything out there for alky...unless...as said...you want a bigger tank to hold more.

 

As far as premix, you do run more oil. Normally in the 20:1 to 28:1 range...

 

As far as type, Klotz Benol has long been a favorite for the alky crowd, and seems to stay mixed the best....

 

Red...you going alky? You dirty dog... After I get mine sorted out and get a season on it...alky might be in my future....

 

Timing is the same. Plugs, you generally run a smaller gap, .018 to .022.

I forget if they run a 7 or a 9 plug...for some reason, I wanna say 9...but not sure.

Yeah, going alky, more for testing purposes than anything else. I play around with a lot of different fuels from time to time and kinda need something to base results on. We have a fuel that we make ourselves that is a hodge-podge of a couple different chemicals and other fuels and it gives way more power over stock. Haven't seen any long-term effects yet though so not sure if I will stick with it. Want to try alky and see if it gives the same, more or less than what we came up with.

 

Besides, there are 500gal tanks of methanol in about 6 different spots around our dunes that I can fill up on, just have to carry oil with me.

 

Next month some time or maybe september I will do the switch.

Rock Springs, WY. Killpecker Sand Dunes. I only live like 30 something miles from the dunes. I'm out there about 4 times a week, then all weekend every weekend. There, Walden, or my ranch. One of the three. The picture in my signature is at "The Pond" at killpecker. The pond isn't around any more, you can't find water at KP this time of year. It only shows up when it rains really hard.

Come on out! Its the least ridden 10,000+ acre sand dunes in america. Big holliday weekends you might get like 50 people out there. Normal weekends there are about 5-10 little groups of people. I've been out there when I was the only person in the entire place. No one else. Kinda spooky when you are 6 or 7 miles back in there and thinking about what would happen if you ran out of gas or broke down. LOL

I may be wrong on the fuel tank, but I thought the alky was a little hard on the plastic. Higher compression and timing is not necessary, but ask any builder on Planet Sand, they have custom domes for alky and all run more timing on alky, and I am sure for good reason. Backcountry cut me some domes for gas at a compression ratio of 15.5:1, his alky domes are 17:1 ratio. Not only are the alky domes smaller, but cut at a different slope la la la. I just do what they tell me.

I don't remember the stock compression ratio...but more comp in any motor is a good thing...:)

Those guys will advance the timing and up the squeez on their lawnmowers....

 

 

Blackcounty will tell you...stock gas tank works just fine!

 

I dropped my shee off at cubshee's house Saturday. When he told me what he'd build me a 10mil on alky for, I about cried. I wish he wouldn't have told me...

 

Needless to say, my 4 mil cub might possibly be up for sale beginning of next year for a 10mil alky motor...
