shaved head or noss head

Recommended Posts

Then get in touch with dlnoss and get a red head, or paint it to look like the rest of your motor and still get the performance out of it. The NOSS head has a lot better flow and larger water passages than stock ones do. I personally would put the money towards the NOSS and ditch the stocker, just for performance alone. Spray all hoaky like and people probably won't think anything of it. :baseball_sleep:

Not black anodizing. I've had several people look my bike over from 5 or so feet and not notice for several minutes that I had a NOSS head. Just what I was going for. Plus, it makes a great cooling and performance difference! I went to 20cc domes and with my timing I run full race gas. But, all you have to do is order bigger domes and you can still run pump gas.

now, how much does the head and domes cost??, and exactly HOW much improvement does it make over a .30 milled head.....my head cost 30 bucks...now compare that to..how much...is it really worth an extra horse or two

only time I'd shave the head is if I'm trying to keep down a budget. the Noss head will flow coolant better which will offset the extra heat gained from extra compression, where with a shaved head, you'll increase the chance for overheating due to more heat w/o better efficiency in the cooling system. It will also have better shaped domes, plus you can fine tune the compression which is a huge benefit over a shaved head. The Noss head is a much better alternative to shaving a head, but it does cost more.

At last check, the NOSS head was 247.50 for an anodized head with domes to an HQ member (make sure and mention that to dlnoss). I think the unanodized heads are $10 or $20 cheaper. Like sredish said, you may not gain a ton of compression over the stock head, but you will definitely gain cooling. Cooler temps are as good as horsepower (well they are horsepower actually). Obviously, if you do not want to run race gas, then you won't really be able to gain any compression by going with an aftermarket because I'm guessing you are very near that threshold right now (post compression when you get a chance). But, if you don't mind running race fuel, you can bump the compression up with smaller domes, and maintain a properly shaped combustion chamber with the aftermarket head.

Another nice thing is you can also go up, then back down if need be. Or say you go up to LS, Utah with a higher elevation. You can change out the domes to keep the same compression, performance there. There's loads of positives with the Noss over a milled head. I'm not/wasn't saying that a milled head is bad, it's an inexpensive way to bump the compression, just beware of the drawbacks, i.e. more heat, stuck with one compression level regardless and so on....

yeah you guys definately got me thinking, i just thought the huge ass radiator and aftermarket water pump would take care of it...i know it runs warmer but i dont know about how much. i can take it to a state park and drag race 3 hours non stop just tearing the shit out of it (maybe thats why i have to put rings in it every 3 months) and it wont overheat or anything, stays running fine...but i will definately look into a noss head, after i get ported of course, thats my main goal right now.

you shouldnt get an aftermarket head just because of the cooling. i read a review of this head on an atv website and the most they could get out of with real world riding was 10 degrees. it rean 10 degrees cooler than a stock head.

thats not much if you think about it.
