Wont idle...

Recommended Posts

Just got the shee the other, day, and it was running great when I parked it, so I go out this morning to ride, and start it up to warm it. It immediately shuts off when not given gas. I rode it around a little bit thinking it just needed to get good and warm, it runs pretty good while moving, a little boggy b4 it takes off, but not major. It still has the stock carbs, and TORS, but I need help getting it to run? As soon as you let of fthe throttle it will shut off soon as it RPM's drop to where idle should be. We tried turning the screws on the rear/top of the tors, from under the seat, but that didnt seem to make a difference in either direction.

I dont see any parking break anywhere on it... I'm thinking it was removed. The air filter could stand for a cleaning, but isn't too bad. It ran great when parked also. Just put the gas in the other day.. topped it off after a long day of riding, Friday. It's 32:1 with 93octane, and yamalube 2-R. Same I've been running since I bought it. The quad isn't at my home, but at my friends, where we ride, so I dont have it right here to pull the plugs and check, but I was thinking maybe it was just some kind of idle adjustment problem, or something I dont know about. I've never dealt with jetting or anything. I learn fast, and have rebuilt my old Blaster a couple times n all, so I have a little experience.

Try fresh plugs. Clean the air filter... I'm assuming the temp hasn't changed drastically since your last ride.

At the clutch lever, the stock perch has a wire going to it (certain years) for the TORS. There is also a wire going into your thumb throttle housing as well.

I'd disconnect all your TORS connections, get some electrial cleaner, spary the piss out of 'em, and reconnect them.

There is a tube going from one carb to the other, make sure that is in place, no cracks or holes in it as well.

Lastly...might be time to take off the carbs and give them a good cleaning.

Somebody else had a similar problem here a while back. he ended up taking the fuel valve out of the tank, and it was plugged up with Sand/Dirt.

Although...you said it runs pretty good after idle, so...probably not the case.

To be 100% honest, the very first thing I did on all my buddies' banshees was remove that. Take about an hour or so, taking your time, and it's very cheap for the kit. I think it's about 50 or 60 bucks for the cable, carb caps, drill, tap and idle screws.

That, and it makes future tuning simple...there's really no down side to it.

Ya I know, although I dont have time to go order/wait for the kit right now, I wanna ride this afternoon! lol. I plan on doing a lot of overhauling including TORS kit, and all that soon. But any tips for adjusting or other ideas to fix the current problem?

Well just got back from working on the banshee today.. Still won't idle. Tried cleaning all the carbs out good and everything, also allt eh connections I could find from the TORS. I dont have the stock clutch lever/perch so I guess there's no parking break, or anything.. Pulled the plugs and they look like new, I'm gonna pick up some new ones tomorrow anyway. The carbs look pretty clean, but I made sure to clean them all very good, and in the jets and everything. It's running a 280main in both, and a 25pilot in both. I've got FMF Gold Series Pipes, and no air box lid. Sound right?? Anyway, it's still running perfect everywhere in the range besides it wont idle AT ALL. Any ideas??? If you hold in the clutch and let go of the gas, it dies where it should start idling.. Help please, I need to ride!

Throw some fatter pilots in there to humor us...FMFs like fat pilots.

Maybe he's starving it for gas...ELL?

What about the carb bowls, you didn't switch them, did you?

Also...the little tube between the carbs is in place and good shape, right?

Yep, the tube between the carbs in in place, and perfect condition, no cracks on the ends or anything. No, I didnt switch anything up, because I took one carb off at a time, to be extra careful, since I'd never done it before. Any suggestions on pilot size? What's the next up from 25? Also, I tried some brand new plugs today, NGK BR8ES, same ones as were in there. Just went to the shop and told 'em I needed Banshee plugs. I've also read that the air screw? has something to do with idle too?? I dunno... just seems weird. Before when it idled, after I first got it, I always thought the idle seemed really, really low, like it was barely goin, it was so quiet you could talk over it quite easily. Although it idled absolutely -perfect-, and you could start it up, and walk away for however long you wanted, and it would still be purring nicely. Soooo tomorrow morning I'll go and get some larger pilots.

27.5 is the next step up.

The air screw does have to do with the idle.

You set it by getting the highest idle you can out of it...the, you adjust the idle on the TORS to be around 1500 to 1800. Of course...if it doesn't idle at all, that's a problem.

Plug choice is perfectly fine. Clean the spark plug end caps real good, too...
