check engine error codes

Recommended Posts

Hey, i need some help! My check engine light in my car went on the other day, normally this would not be a big deal but i am going for an inspection monday and it will fail automatically with the light on! I hooked it up to a scanner and it read "1404 Auxiliary Emissions controls", there were actually 2 of these. I cleared the code so the light is off but im sure it will come back soon enough. Anyone know what this "1404" points to? it must be some sort of sensor but which one? Any help is appreciated!

if you had a plugged cat convertor it would be getting super hot glowing red and your motor would run like total ass. not removing the exhaust.

you will have to talk to a shop about that code, could be your smog pump or some emissions stuff.

on those new vehicles that put a lot of stuff on that could go bad.

Alldata is a good site, but usually I just call the dealership and talk to service and they can tell you exactly what the code is. Plus with the computer controlled cars these days its 95 percent of the time a sensor..........02, crank position, cam position, vaccuum leak in gas tank return system, etc.

Personally, I think they put all these damn sensors on the cars and charge $150.00 for them because the engines are running a long time these days, so if the sensors go out you need to have engine work done. So, with a $150.00 sensor plus $195.00 for diagnostics (ie OBDII reader) thats $345.00 for a sensor that the engine runs fine without. A damn crank sensor, come on, nothin' a good timing light cant find out. But then again the computer adjusts for any discrepancies...................

hey pal with the low voltage o2 sensor code....let me explain how an o2 sensor works...briefly:

it measures the amount of oxygen in the exhaust sytem and translates this to the computer via voltage signals......ranging from 999mv-001mv or .999V-.001V above .500 is rich and below is lean (fuel mixture) normally this voltage is continuously oscillating as the computer is always fine tuning the engine for fuel economy. if the voltage stays below .500v for a pre-determined amount of time the light will come on and set a code for low voltage, and the same if rich will set high voltage...so chances are your o2 Sensors are performing as designed, and maybe you actually have a vacuum leak, restricted fuel filter, weak fuel pump etc......may want to take it to someone that knows what they are doing.....don't buy any more o2 sensors, I can only guess it is not a dealership you took your car to...I also suppose they charged you "Diagnosis"?

I apoligize for the rambling on, and sounding like the all knowing, but I hate seeing people taken advantage of, I have worked as a technician at various General Motors Dealerships for the past ten years, and get some cars/trucks whatever that have been to Pep-Boys, Midas, Jiffy lube etc. and spent thousands of dollars on parts only for them to say "take it to the dealer" and we find a wiring problem, blown fuse etc. but hey the Dealerships are a rip off right?

well, wha tdid they find?

i cleared the code, drove it 70 miles, and just took it to inspection yesterday. It passed  Light didnt come back yet so i dont know what it was, all i did was change the spark plugs but that wouldnt cause the error code as far as i know.
