Pistons

My machinest talked me into Pro-X's. I brought my top end to him to get done, I even brought along some wiseco's pro lite's.

 

LOL>>>He wouldnt put them in. said he didnt want to be re-doing his work every year. That was two race season's ago. and mind you I race desert.

 

He told me that Pro-X is the only manufacturer that uses stock specs. He was also saying that in order for them to be a stock replacement part, they need to undergo extreme testing, and their specs have to "match or better" the stock parts.

 

Basically was telling me that they are better than stock because of the rigors they have to go thru in order to call them factory replacement parts.

 

Anyway, he said stock and wiseco suked.....pro-x was the one. He also said that Vito's was a modified wiseco lite piston. HE was saying that they take a pro-lite and shave a piece off...and call it thiers.

 

Im no pro....but I listen to the pro's.

 

I had 145 PSI when I got my new top end. 8 desert races, 3 XC races, and a sheetload of practicing later...I am at 138 PSI.

 

I should be doing the rings right now...but I am being lazy.

 

my machinest tole me to change the rings when I noticed a 1 pound difference. I think thats a little obsesive.

Well they might be good for a stock relpacement, but if you have it bored out I would go with the Wiseco's Best piston on the market period. My motor work (bored +20 with Pro Lites and ported) was done by one of if not the best in Oregon! A friend of mine has had them in for 4 years now without any problems, and it still runs strong.

Stock spec means they are cast not forged which means they are weaker than the weisco's. The only reason Weisco would be worse is if you refuse to warm up your bike before riding it, since forged pistons don't expand at the same rate as your cylinders like the cast pistons do.

 

I would find another Mechanic that knows WTF they are talking about.

 

Pro-X are much more prone to failure than weisco just do a search. Sure if youw ant something stock-like then they will be ine but if you want something STRONGER than stock stick with weisco and warm up the bike before you ride it, hell you should be doing this anyways.

 

Your compression should increase as you wear in the topend and your rings seat correctly.

Well said! The only real problem Wiseco had was a few years back circlips were coming out on some people.They do expand more,so if bored to tight you can get some heat siezing.But atleast the skirts dont break as easy as others.

I run Weiscos, next bore I'll try cast Pro-x pistons. A little theory I was told that pistons don't wear after breakin is completed. Look at your 'worn' piston that is out of round, it still has the machine marks. A piston deforms from slapping the cylinder wall, the more clearance the more accelerated the deformation. New pistons are oval, wider at the piston skirts. A Weisco piston will deform faster because the increased cylinder to piston clearance until the piston reaches operating temperture. A cast piston supposable will last longer due to the tighter cylinder to piston clearence. I was told to replace my piston when it was perfectly round and I should replace the rings once between pistons and would probably need a bore every two pistons.

 

I checked my new Weisco pistons and they are oval, wider at the skirt and the old pistons were smallest at the skirt. As many hours as I put on longevity is more important than a light piston and regular maintenance should prevent any pistion failures. There is to many fast bikes running Pro-x pistons on the track to totally dog them.

I'd get a new builder...he's no pro. Vitos makes their own, Wiseco makes their own.

Vitos are cheap Taiwan parts....

 

Wiseco ProLites are the only way to go...

 

Change rings when you notice a pound of difference...

 

Maybe if your name was Ricky Carmichael or James Stewart, you had your own mechanic and a limitless budget...and the racing you did was that competitive....otherwise...no way Jose...

 

That's like telling someone who drives normally to change their oil in their car every 500 miles....

amen brotha you got to it before me... this guy sounds like a fool thats trying to get that green baby! weisco are used in almost every type of racing application. and to change your rings after 1 lbs of comp is lost? lol well i guess your going to be repalcing rings once a week if thats the case.

I have used both pistons and have had alot better luck with pro x the wiesco cant handle the nitrous every couple months I was replacing them the pro x have had a full 10 months of HARD HARD riding time and they are holdin up great, besides replacing rings once.
