Anything to look @?

Well, this thursday, if all goes to plan, I'll be going to check out a 97 banshee. It is red and black, has a red PC'd frame, and black PC'd swinger, FMF gold series pipes, imitation holeshot rears, YZ handlebars, and some other little stuff. Is there anything specific I should be looking at on a banshee to show signs of problems ahead or whatever. It also has a new wiseco top end less than 10 hours ago. He's asking $1900 firm. What do you think of the price? Here's a couple pics I have.

when i buy a bike from somone they think im crazy as fuck ...

 

i inspect the entire engine underneathe and what not make sure theres no traces of oil dripping from the cases , check the seals around the engine for leaks , also check the oil color to see if he has a bad seal and hes getting coolant in the oil , compression test , most of all how does she sound when running . etc etc etc

I'd pay $1,900 for that thing any day. It is a very good price. Check over everything, pick up the front wheel on each side and move it back and forth side to side and see if the bushings are ok. pick up the whole back end and move it from side to side and if everything is tight...your good to go!

I realize the front tires aren't good. He said that they have small leaks in them that run out after a week or so, but he's willing to put tubes in them for free, before I go to look at it, since he works @ a shop.. So all in all, if everything checks out, it's a pretty good deal?

Not too bad for a little fixer uper project. Looks like she needs some TLC, nothin a few G's can't fix.

 

Offer him $1500.....Tell him you need the $400 bucks for some Fullboars to replace that gay-ass flamer job on the plastic.

I think a common mistake people make when looking at atv's or anything for that matter is. They ask themselves is there anything wrong with the bike. Which is okay, but the question they really need to ask themselves is the bike worth the asking price.

If you get the bike for a good price and have to put bearings or minor stuff on it then that's okay. Just figure what you have to do to the bike and what it cost and add that to the price of the bike and then ask yourselve is the bike worth the total cost. A friend of mine just brought blown up waverunner for 1700. Sounds like a bad deal for a blown bike, but it's only going to run 400 to 500 hundred to do the topend. So he'll have 2100 to 2200 hundred in it. The bike books for 4K. He got one hell of deal if you ask me. Just something you might want to keep in mind. From the pictures it doesn't look like a bad deal to me.

 

I look for frame damage, you can tell if stuff just doesn't fit quite right there maybe frame damage. Look at the silencers are they level? Look around the "triple tree" they get bent there alot. Look for paint that's been chipped off (usually will rust there) around joints usually mean the joint has been bent. Is the plasitc cracked? Shake the wheels are they tight (bad bearings?). Ride the thing, Not just around the block ride it for awhile and see if any problems show themselves. Does it over heat? Does it roll staight? Does the clutch slip? Either way good luck to you.

I'd bring a compresion tester...

My buddies looked at three banshees (before he bought a 400EX) and they all had less than 100PSI, and the owners all swore the top ends were recently rebuilt...

 

Yet when they were cold...they'd kick 'em 10 times to get 'em to start.

 

Look at the frame for cracks, any obvious bends, dings... Oil leaks as said...

And...look at the oil on the dipstick and air filters. That sounds stupid...but, people who generally take care of their shit and do maintenance clean the filter regularly and change the oil.

 

Take a peak at the plugs...and take it for a good ride if possible, shifting through all gears...even if you have to lug it...

 

Unless you are very short...those handlebars are LOW as shit...

A friend of mine, and I went to see/ride that banshee last night. It seems to be very clean, no signs of leaking around any of the gaskets, or seals. The oil was all good. It started up with 2 kicks or so when cold. After that it would start 1st kick. The handlebars are low, but they are kinda cool feeling like that, and I'm 6'2". All in all, it seemed to be in great condition. MAN do these things have some power??? I was test ridin it down a sandy/dirt road, and I was just trying to get a feel for the power, and seeing if I could get the front end up in like 1st/2nd, and everytime I'd hammer it, all I would hear was KKKSHHHHHHHHHH the tires spinnin and throwin rocks and sand everywhere lol! I loved the sound of it too. I'm hoping to get back up there next week to pick it up.

Yep, you've officially been bit by the bug!!

 

Unless you're just drag racing that quad, your back/shoulders/arms will get tired very fast from being that low, especially at your height. It'll almost be like riding a crotchrocket over trails...

 

Taller bars would be first on my list for you...trust me..

Shorter riders would love that setup...but I think you'll be better off going up higher on the bars...
