First thing you have to do is remove the (4) rivets that attach the stock basket to your ring gear. I used a drill press, center punched the rivets, broke the mushroomed heads off and knocked the rest out. I havent recieved my new basket yet, but looks like the new basket should bolt up like the stocker. I'm unsure as to whether to use the old cushions though, that is if your new basket doesnt have replacement cushions. Surely someone has experience here. There are (2) sizes of cushions that came out of my stock basket and I am unsure as to which order to put them back in. Good to see you around some more, Big Red... I ground off the rivets on the basket side (wasn't reusing it anywho...) and used my air hammer to push the rivets out. Worked quite nicely... You'd need to have your head examined. Havn,t bought anything, A buddy replaced his and offered me his OEM to get rollin again, I've seen some places on the net saying they could be bolted??? Nothing will be threaded though. Nut&Bolt???? Sounds silly to me. What would a guy do if he bought an OEM basket. Maybe OEM would only be available with the Gear. MILO Posted June 27, 2006 Report Share Posted June 27, 2006 a new stock basket will run you around $175. i'm sure it's a basket and gear assembly together since it's riveted together. i'd bet the only way you could reuse the original gear with another stock basket would be to tap the basket rivet holes and screw it together, that's basically how aftermarket ones come, with screws to put your gear back on. not sure if you can get stock cushions replaced seperately though, since the stocker isn't made to pull apart and reassemble. i don't know if aftermarket cushions are the same diameter/thickness or not, but they are sold seperately. my hinson basket w/cushions was $190 from rmatv. in my opinion there's no comparison. if you have it apart and things need replaced, go with an aftermarket over the stock. you won't regret spending the $$ for it. I'd bet somone has a stock angle cut basket gear they'll get rid of, if they replaced it with a straight cut gear set. Many drag racers and hard core duners replace the stock crank/flywheel gear with those that are straight cut for more strength... Hinson probably does make the best one.
