watkins
A compression test is a good way to judge how good your top end is doing. Just get a good tester and test both cylinders... they should be within 10% of eachother.

dajogejr
A compression tester as stated will tell you the general health of the top end. Gashes in the top of your piston could mean a few things, poor fuel quality, too much timing, piston worn out and starting to come apart. Air leak, lean jetting, dirt in the motor.... Hopefully...you dealer won't just throw a top end on and call it a day, hopefully they find the reason for the gashes...
batoutofshell
Why are you taking it to a stealership pull the cylinders and change them yourself
