WALLACE84
There are some 2 stroke engines that don't use reed valves... the Rotax 670 for example has a rotary valve mechanisim instead. Thats what I was going to say
rebelbanshee2
I am 90% positive those Polarises did not use reeds and are piston port design 95 PSI seems to low.
Rustbag
Cool, thanks for the replys. It definately doesn't have a reed valve. The piston has no "port holes" in it either. It could still suck under the edge of the skirt by design. 95lbs seemed low to me too. Even though new head gasket and rings. Could be our trouble. Haven't tinkered with it again yet. Will this evening. Thanx.
brock_fuzzy_69
have you double checked to make sure the piston isnt in backwards i have seen ti done scary enough

chris642
have you double checked to make sure the piston isnt in backwards i have seen ti done scary enough i wouldnt be suprised actually! Whats worse is that i worked on a banshee with 1 piston facing forward and one facing backwards, thats kinda tough to get one right then one wrong! Rustbag
Piston has big arrow pointing towards the front. I double checked it. No ports in the side of the piston on this one either. I assume the airfuel mixture just sucks in under the edge of the skirt. Still haven't messed with that turd again yet. Been cleanin the Banshee which is getting the frame painted. .
wow...havent been on here for a while, this new design is weird'n me out a little bit. We've got an OLDDD honda 250 dirtbike that we rescued out of a barn that doesnt have a reed valve system.... Reeds are kind of "new" technology. Reeds are there to give you low end, and dual stage reeds are "really new" technology
MudSlinger09
da 300 has no reed valves but the 400 sportsman does....
shanYE west
Talking about wierd... how about a 4 stroke with reeds! I saw one last year. I think it was a old 500 honda dirt bike..

What could reeds possibly be doing on a 4 stroke, they have valves so theres no reason for them. Sure that wasnt a CR 500?? Im intrested in seeing that, i have never heard of that before! racer
da 300 has no reed valves but the 400 sportsman does.... a 400 sportman does not have reeds. maybe a 400 scrambler youre thinking of?
rocketboy
theres tons of old and new 2 strokes that dont use reeds , most common modern designs that dont use them use a unique rotary valve intake design ,and are becoming popular again . old school sled engines and smal lindustrail 2 stroke engines simply dont use them because of the range they work in doesnt require them .i na way reeds are an unecessary evil to keep powerband smooth ,linear and extend ring life also the reverse wave ca n blow back throug h the intake without them which is bad . new rotary valves are the shit and rotax is making some huge power ,and really theres man y differnt designs o n the market that most people dont know about .theres even a 3 stroke engine

Its a 1983 HONDA XL600R here's part numbersVALVE, REED 16311-MG3-000 001 $8.40 13 STOPPER, REED VALVE 16312-MG3-000 001 $4.10 And ya'll probably thought I was crazy...
