Bad axle bearings

Recommended Posts

Last friday I went riding and heard a bad noise. I looked at my back brakes and noticed my swingarm carrier was being shredded by the sprocket. I have been working on it little by liitle and letting the PB sit

I have every thing apart after a lot of pounding everthing with a BMF hammer and some PB penetrater and a crow bar for the outerpart of the bearings. Now I am just waiting for replacement parts.

Every part of replacing axle bearings is a bitch...first it was the axle nuts, then the inner part of the bearings, then the outer part of the bearings. I hope the installation goes a lot smoother.

it was for me when i did my buddy's 03, but i had to get a new housing b/c the spocket bearing was so shot that one ball corkscrewed all the way to the brake side. have fun and enjoy

If you still have the stock carrier, you might want to drill a hole in it, and install a grease zerk, while you have it down. Then, before installing the bearings, take the inner seal out of each one. I did this little mod, about 6 years ago, and I haven't had anymore bearing problems. Just my .02.

It sounds like a good idea. I haven't been riding in over a week :( and I usually go twice a week. I can't wait till my chain, sprockets and bearings come

Finding the right tap for the zerk, is the worst part. Be sure and clean the inside of the carrier up good. Use some sandpaper, or a wire wheel or brush to clean the rust out, where the bearings and seals set. If you can get your hands on a bearing press, it won't take very long to press in the bearings and seals. A big bench top vise will also work.

ya, it was pretty easy if u have the right tools. use a socket or bearing driver the size of the bearing to hammer it in evenly and dont forget the sleeve in the middle. what bearings r u using? i used pivot works on that '03 and for my '87 Quadracer on the fronts.

yeah, that's a real bitch of a job banghead i've been told that the initial axle removal is the worst, after the first time it's not so bad. but i haven't had to take mine out again yet so  but it is 10x easier to put back together.

what about those zerks that just tap in with a hammer or something? do they seal up and work ok?
