bigboybanshee
Ha!....great minds think alike 511454 Yes they do! RNBRAD is right on the money Jeff, where did you see the specs for a ported box? They must have changed the design from when I bought mine. The little pamphlet that came with the subs only recommended sealed enclosures. You will get better sound with sealed

ellison445
Deeper Bass, I have more than enough boom with my current setup and that train horn Ahhh, makes more sense now.... bigboybanshee
Deeper Bass, I have more than enough boom with my current setup and that train horn 511471 Ever thought about adding another .2 cubic feet to each enclosure? Are they all in separate enclosures now or in one big box? LOL, you have no idea how many boxes I've built in the past to change the way my subs sound
ellison445
One Huge Box, If I redo my setup Im changing it complete. The reason Im leaning towards the L7 , Im getting a very good deal on them 135 each

The reason Im leaning towards the L7 , Im getting a very good deal on them 135 each 511474 That is your problem. When you redo it, have each sub in it's own separate enclosure...it can be one big box, but make sure each sub has its own airspace with dividers. Also, I'd recommend going .15 or .20 bigger than the "recommended" box size to give you better low frequency response. Who's building the box? KlotzBanshee
They'll give you specs, sealed-ported or otherwise, on every sub they make. But when the solobarics came out back in the late 90's they were said to be great (designed) for small sealed enclosures. Ya know I went from a sealed box to a bandpass box w/ my old comps, I heard a bunch of shit from various people that "those aren't made for a bandpass box" but after they all heard em out of a bp box they ate their words...True, they don't hit as tight as they did in a seled box...but the looooows, holly shit!!!!!!! they booooom! I love to piss the neighbors off I've had professional car audio shops say I had the best (clearest, not loudest) system they've ever heard. And I do all my own instalations. $.

bigboybanshee
Ported boxes aren't "bad", don't get me wrong...I just believe that you'll get the best sound from a sealed enclosure. Bandpass boxes are designed to reduce distortion so it sounds like you're getting more, but in reality the subs can be distorting and you won't know it. I fried a pair of JL W5's experimenting One of the best sounding enclosures I had was a bandpass, but my subs didn't last as long as I had hoped they would....my voice coils were starting to crack and after time, the sound quality diminished and it started sounding like ass.... This is all just from my personal experience with subs/high end audio....I've been building boxes since I was 12. My brother got me hooked really young, I've been doing it ever since LOL, I'll probably catch shit for this but I was 13 years old with a par of 12's and one 15 hooked up to a car battery and head unit with a hifonics amp in my room....my parents hated it

Not saying you or anyone else in here does, but too many people crank up the gains on their amps to get maximum volume when that also gets ya maximum distortion, which we all know is the enemy.....Turn it down, so you can turn it up...thats what i say anyway...to a certain extent. .
havent been in the system world for a while now so I dont know what to tell you for subs (I'm still running some good ol jl 12 w6's (the original w6's)) But I do have to agree on sticking with a sealed enclosure. I used to build boxes on the side for a living (well, to support my stereo habit) and you wont get a better tighter hit than a sealed box. Ported and bandpass will give you more boom, but you lose sound quality. If you want a deeper hit build the box a little bigger than recommended, it will have more air to disperse inside the box allowing the sub to move more, creating a wider wavelength Personally the system I have is a Precision Power pro650 running my competition mbquart's (tweeter, 4 1/2, and 6 1/2's) and 2 12 inch jlw6's. I'm running a competition alpine head unit (still sticks with the quality units today and its 13 years old), and an alpine digital signal processor to time delay all the speakers to hit a microphone at the same time to create a soundstage. I got a 12 disc alpine cd changer as well. Sad to say, this whole system is sitting in a box because I havent found the right vehicle to put it back into yet. shanYE west
I agree with bigboybanshee. People think the gain control is a volume knob. So people crank them up. Underpowered subs is the number one reason people blow subwoofers. Ported boxes can have great SQ. You just have to know how to tune the ports to the right frequency for that sub. You just can't pop a hole in the box and throw a port in and call it good. I've been out of the car audio world for a while now so I'm not up to date with the new equipment but I prefer the sound of multiple smaller drivers compared to 2 or three larger subs. I had 8 8's in My Z28 and was killer for SQ and could still play deep and loud. I like Eclipse TI pro subs my self. But the Kicker L7's kick some ass. I heard two 10's running off two Diamond D7's and WOW.... very nice... I'm not a bass head but I like it loud every now and then...
