Paddle Question

Geoff

Recommended Posts

OK, I just got a Banshee and I'm going to get new paddles down the road. My buddies here in oregon all run 22-9 or 10 paddle haulers. Now in Cali it seems the guys are running 7 or 8 so whats the deal?

A friend told me it's because of the lenght of the hills and type of sand but I was curious. I know most of our hills are shorter but we have really fine loose sand in the spring and summer most of the time.

I was leaning toward 8 pdl extremes when the time comes so I can roost my buddies better.

Hopefully someone can shed some light on this for me, thanks

Well, Its a 00'. I was told it has a race port, head shaved .040", wiseco ultra lite pistons, welded crank, 310 mains, Boyesen Reeds(stock cages), twin filters & FMF gold series pipes....Can't think of what else would be useful.

I just don't want to be one of the ones that over paddles it. My buddies bike has T6's and coolhead and rejetted. He is running 9 paddle 22 extremes and it doesn't seem to R up instantly and I think that might be associated with being over paddled but what the hell do I know. I'm learning something new about these things everyday.

It's just I've never seen a banshee at any of the oregon dunes with a 8 paddle 22 hauler, let alone a 7 paddle. It seems like the norm way down south in Cali though.

8 paddle non-extremes are about all you need for stock stroke/bore bikes unless your doing <100 foot drags. If your drags are that short, then the little bit of added traction out of the hole will help you more than the speed loss will hinder you. At most I'd say some 8 paddle extremes or 9 paddle haulers. Also for that short of a drag, I doubt its even neccesary to run a 22" tire. You're not going to see a whole lot of elongation. Might as well go with a more dune-able 20", or at least a 21".

You offset tire diameter with gearing. So he could easily run a 22" tire, he just might end up at 12/43 gearing or something to compensate (not neccesarily at that gearing, I didn't do the calculations).

My point of going with a smaller tire is to gain the better handling. You won't get as much elongation as you would with the larger diameter tire but if the drags are really short, that's not going to cost you much, if any. Along the same lines, you might prefer to go with a 10" wheel vs. an 8".

I'd go with the 22's and just re-gear it if I go that route. Some of the ruts in the holeshots start getting so bad that on the short tire the changing starts jumping.

I'll go with the 8 extremes most likely when I get to that point. That way once I do some more motor mods and such I will have the tire for the job then also.

Thanks for your guys input so far, everything helps when you pretty much don't know squat.

Can't wait to break it in this weekend.

Thanks again

Hey Geoff,On my 04 shee (see sig) I run 13/42 gearing with the 22-11-10 8 paddles and it turns them just fine. Its actually pretty fast with them.I have a vidio of that banshee in the vid thread Tittled my 04 banshee banshee hill in OR.That will give you an idea of how yours will run with that size tire and 13/42 gearing.

Banshee thats a nice vid, wish you could see more of the hill though. It seems to run pretty well.

I judt got back from Florence today after it's maiden voyage. It runs pretty good so I was happy. With stock gearing(14/41) I could hang with my buffies shee thats been bored and has a coolhead & v-force reeds and so on.

The 20-10-10 10 paddles work well but when I get in the holeshots with the loose really loose sand and ruts you could here the chain start jumping. So as soon as I get some more flow I'm going to try and sell my set and get 22-11-8 8 pdl and re-gear as needed. The only bad part was I had to come back a few hours early since my clutch cable broke  .

The funny part is I let my bro-in-law and one of my best friends who both have raptors ride it and now they want shee's to :D , kinda funny.

Thanks for everyone's help......Let the spending begin, lol

Geoff,I use the 22-11-10 8padlles on my cheetah power valve 421cc and my cheetah cub 421 banshees. So you can figure you will probably never out grow that size tire,I actually run 14/41 gearing on the cheetah engines.I,m sorry to hear about your cable breaking,That always sucks.

Well got the clutch cable fixed so I'm ready to go again. But at the shop they have a set off Ultralite 22-11-8 9pdl extremes on douglas rims for $250. I may jump at this even though it's not optimum but it will save me $$$. Seems like a damn good deal.

Bansheeseat$$, thanks for your help. Yeah those damn cheetahs make alot of power so you don't really have to screw with the gearing which would be nice, but I'm not even close to that....yet. Atleast I got to ride for awhile rather than it happening straight off the trailer.

Thanks for everyones help, I'll let yuh all know what happens
