Race Gas

Recommended Posts

Race gas is just the term given to any higher than normal octane fuel. Some areas premium is 93, others its 91. I've seen "race gas" as low as 94 octane. Octane is just a measurement of how resistant the fuel is to lighting off. Higher the number, the higher the ignition point. The point of running higher octane is so that you can run more aggressive timing and higher compression without detonation (that's where the fuel explodes just from the compression and not the spark).

How does that 700 go ?

489947[/snapback]

(stock) 700 has just a tab less pull end than the shee (almost noticable) ....but on top end the shee walks away at 75+mph havnt had a chance to ride my shee in about a WEEK! i accidentally bent my hub doin i dont know what!....

power delivery is smooth and hits hard when needed .. i wish i had more top end though

I know some people run av gas wich is usually like 104 octane. and most race gas is 110. vp and sunoco have many different versions of race gas. some going up to the 130 octane. another plus to race gas is that your engine will run much cooler. because of the fact that higher octane gas burns slower and much more efficiently it decreases the temp of the engine. will keep chrome pipes chrome. if you up your compression you will have to run race gas. or at least 50 50

AV gas is usually 100LL, which is 100 octane Low Lead. It is about half the price of race fuel $3.50 a gallon vs. $7.50 and up for race fuel. It is a cheaper route to go and runs real good. I believe about 160-165 psi on the compression and you need to run straight race fuel to avoid detonation (ie. your killin' your motor). Someone can chime in here, but I think you can get away with 100 octane. It also has a lot to do with you elevation, outside temp., mods etc. the list goes on. Well good luck any...............

Compression and timing are the key factors in the need for race gas.

Comp. has more to do than timing.

If you're at 155 psii or lower, properly jetted of course, premium pump gas (92 or better) should suffice. However, increasing your timing can alter this a bit.

You only need to run as much octane to keep you bike from pre-igniting...or pinging...as needed.

Running race gas or higher octane gas in a bike that doesn't need it gives you a mental edge, that's it. Ok...ok...it's smells awesome too, but, it's a waste of money.

Round here...you can get anywhere from 104 to 113 octane readily at the pump.

Now...if you have the bucks, oxygenated fuels is where it's at. But...it's pricey as all hell!!
