Banshee0028
Ok, have a pretty clean '01 I am trying to remove the flywheel...No rust anywhere in the flywheel area, all clean....bought a 240 ft\lb impact from Harbor and when I try to remove it (reverse), it just sits there,.....It gets real hot, but does not move at all!! I then tried to remove the 32mm bolt for the front sproket, and it zipped off without a blink.... I tried to hold the front\rear brakes with someone sitting on it, and manually remove it, but I heard something sound like a slipping noise inside, so I was worried I might damage something inside the tranny if I put any more pressure on it that way.... I also tried the rubber strap tool, but it started to slip before I could put put 100% pressure on it..... Any ideas? The impact is rated at 240lbs...Should this be enough??? WALLACE84
ah, you try a flywheel puller?
Banshee0028
ah, you try a flywheel puller? 489370[/snapback] dont you remove the bolt first then use the puller? its bolted on right?
Novaguy
Yes, you remove the nut first. I would think that 240lbs would be plenty. Is there a setting on the impact gun? If there is, make sure it is on the maximum. Also try spraying some liquid wrench or wd40 on the threads and let it penetrate for a while. Hope it helps. BansheeBrian
chain wrench works good for holding the flywheel.
thegroup
try going one way and then the other. that usually works for me, just dont really go down on it when tighting
Old Two-Smoke
There are several reasons your impact isnt taking it off. First harbor import impacts are rated at peak impulse torque. Make sure you have enough air to run the impact, it needs volume not just pressure. Smack the end with a hammer then make sure you have a real heavy socket. The thin ones absorb much of the impact the wrench provides. Hit the gun in the other direction for several blows then reverse it. If it dosent smack it again it will then come right off. Mine is an electric $50 special However, I did try quickly tightening it, then reversing it, but no luck. However you are probably right, this impact is prob rated at max, and I am not getting near 240lbs out of it. I am also using a normal Craftsman deep 6pt socket since the shorter one did not fit due to the bolt comming through. Will a true impact socket make a difference? Old Two-Smoke
Yes, a long socket just absorbs the blows from the gun. I have seen some really good electric impacts, with its limitation and your long socket your just not quite there.. Try the smack thing and a shorter socket. Banshee_Guy
THat bold is directly on your crank... the only thing stoping the crank from spinning when holding your flywheel is the timing key! THe only think that could be spinning is the crank but you would notice the bike turning over and trying to start. Ive taken many off but have never had this problem! If the timing key broke that means your timing is messed and it wont run too well! or it could cause your motor to blow!
trex banshee
there is no bolt on your crank it is your crank so be really careful not to fuck it up. cause there is no bolt you can replace if you screw up the threads. now if you have tried the impact and the wd40 and still no luck(are you sure the keyway isn't broken and the engine is turning over?) your last alternative would probably be heat. you won't need a whole lot so be careful just get it warm and try it and if it doesn't come off get it a little warmer. i have never had to do this mine always comes right off but it is the only thing i can think of. sredish
get a flywheel puller before you F it up. They're only like 10 bux. Just get one and then put the impact on that with light bumping pressure and it should pop it loose, but to keep hammering on the flywheel alone, not sure I'd keep doing that.
