NickyPap
Well my clutch was having some troubles. Slipping and sometimes not engaging. replaced the clutch cable and it helped alot because the old one was gunked up. Well rode it hard thru the gears and every once in a while it would slip and catch. got back home and pulled the cover off.everything looked good arrow lined up no shavings but found a circlip all bent up inside. It was at the bottom of the case but if it could of worked it's way up around the gears I think I could of had a mess. It looks like the circlip that goes on the idler gear at the end of the counter shaft but I think I can see one on there already. I recently had my bike worked on and don't know if they accidently dropped one in there or maybe this worked it's way off from somewhere. Would this have anything to do with my clutch problems or do you think it's more in the adjustment. Also, the lever on that holds the bottom end of the clutch cable seemed to be a bit bent up and rubbing against the bottom of the left carb so I lightly bent it down enough to clear. unfortanately, I do not have the proper tools to remove my basket. All the screws holding my hd springs are tight too. Any help would be appreciated as usual THANKS! Edited March 5, 2006 by NickyPap
NickyPap
...well I got it back together and I think it's OK. Seems to be shifting strong. But now I have another issue. Seems to want to rev a bit high. Maybe a air leak? Maybe my slides? Always something Well I hope that circlip did not belong in there because if something comes apart I'm in trouble! I really won't know unless I rip everything apart more than I did. Any guesses?
FASTOYS
MAy want to pressure test it for an air leak as sometimes things flying around in the clutch side can rip the crank seal! Need to make darn sure that clip is on the idler gear or you could have some real carnage! Also the idler gear is worn and wobbley which is why it trys to knock off the clip. Shoot me a pm or call if you need any help over the phone!
lowriderb
it looks like the clip off the kick starter gear... you may want to go ahead and pull the clutch basket all the way off and look becuase it will be a mother if you ruin a good basket and gear for something that simple
suzuki0702
yeah i couldnt tell you what that looks like it came from but stick your head back there and ya should be able to see the clip if its on there on the idler gear...revving high probably an air leak..later
woodro77
the same thing happened to me last week, clip and washer came off idler gear , got jammed in plastic water pump gear , broke that then bike overheated. if the clip is off the idler gear you can tell right away, it will be very loose
BigRed350x
Looks like your idler gear clip. Get a flashlight and look behind your clutch basket and you can see if that's where its from or not. That's the only clip like that in there, so I would think that's what it is.
NickyPap
Well I've been thinking about that little circlip since Sunday and just didn't feel good. That thing was in there from somewhere so I figured I better waste some more fluid and pull it back apart again. It says in the Clymer's on page 171 that the idler gear should spin freely. Well it doesn't spin at all! And even worse you can wobble it back and forth and I can see that it is missing that circlip that I have all bent up. And on top of it all I'm missing the washer that goes in between the gear and the circlip! I guess they forgot to put that on and with that bit of slop the gear must of bent and threw the circlip to the bottom of the cover. I slid the cover back on and loaded her up. She's going back to the shop where they can pull my basket off and put it back together right. I think I was pretty lucky nothing came apart the few times I have rode it since I've had it back from the shop. Anyone know why my idler gear does not spin? FASTOYS
It wont spin freely with the clutch basket ON the bike! Might want to inspect that crank seal as i have seen a bunch of them get wrecked by that lil clip when this happens!!
NickyPap
Thanks! I will mention that when I go back for my washer. Thanks for the info on the gear. I don't have any tools to pull the basket off.
