Not in California. Pretty much unless its a designated OHV area its illegal to ride there. Public land is off-limits to OHV's. Granted its often overlooked when its out in the boonies, but these folks have people tearing it up on their streets (dirt) and within eye/earshot of their homes. Pretty irresponcible behavior on the part of the riders if you ask me.

careless an irresponsible riders will ruin it every time. :shootself: granted, there are some tree huggers, enviro's that will never be happy, but most people are pretty reasonable about offroad riding. as long as it doesn't cause any damage directly to their land or living situation. i can leave my house and go for miles on trails, through farms, people's driveways, around their yards, thru their woods and fields, etc. as long as you show a little respect when near their home or don't destroy things, or do it 100x a day, it's not a problem. there are places to rip it up, and those where you should restrain yourself a little to provide for future riding possibilities. i ride in my own yard a lot too, and yeah it shows a little wear, no big deal. but if someone was to come in my yard and start drag racing over and over, rippin doughnuts, and screamin around all day and night tearin the shit out of it, i'd be pissed off too, so to a point i can see where these folks are coming from.

on the other hand, if it's being done on public land, and they just happen to be next to it and don't like it - MOVE!! or just shut up and deal with it. B) better yet, look into the sport and see what it's all about and why so many other people are into it. i bet if they tried it once, they'd be out there rippin it up too and be happy to have a place to ride so close to home!

Sorry guys, but I have to agree w/ most of what's being said over there.  There's a few nutjobs but most of em just don't wanna listen to a bunch of 4 strokes w/ race exhausts riding back n' forth 100 yards from their bedroom window all day/night.

so what about harley's driving by houses in residential areas ? (not that i mind) but they can rattle some windows in a house for sure even if the house is 100' from the road, so how come we don't hear them complaining about that? & yes the guy that tried to run buddie over ya he should be kicked in the head a few times cause they are the poeple that ruin it for us and they have to relize that not eveyone that owns a quad or an ORV is an outlaw.

Most harley's don't go back n' forth on the same stretch of street all day and half the night. Few times a day is annoying, but tolerable to all but the most anal retentive.

The problem I see is that the cops are feeling pressured to do something. Since catching a guy on a dirtbike usually requires at least a couple units plus helicopter backup, that's alot of resources just to write a ticket for trespassing. Much easier and cheaper solution is to just ban OHV's. Few punks gotta fuck it up for everyone.

dude there's plenty of space to ride where it's acceptable. it's not like b/c ppl may be unable to ride in some areas that their eventually gonna take it all away. is this whole thing actually DIRECTLY AFFECTING ANYONE HERE? if so, then i guess u have a right to be upset. if not, then dont worry about it guys!

I can think of several SoCal areas that have seen closures in the past 15 years. That's how it happens. Some riders are dicks, residents get pissed, area gets closed. I know of at least 1 state without a single place for legal riding; who says that can't happen anywhere else?

It is a very tough battle, as both groups have some big differences. Loud pipes, and Roosting their asses is not going to help the ATV cause. They'll think you are one of the irresponsible ones contributing to the problem. The only way is to fight them logically. But then again the extremists who want the environment to be extremely pure will never be happy either.

You guys should be happy you aren't living in CT where there is no legal land to ride. Hell I dream about the dunes you guys have. I am very very jealous. I wish you luck in trying to preserve that fun, and hope these enviro nazis don't win!

Wallrat - I did not know that about public land in California. I know here the public riding areas are state parks which is or came from public land. What were the OHV areas in California before they were OHV areas?

I fall back on item 3 in my original post. Responsible riding helps our case. We don't need anyone else aggravating land owners.

Okay... I'm going to bounce an idea off your guys. It is just an idea - so don't flame me too much...

What is we policed our own?

The local Sheriff could either put a few experienced deputies on ATVs or give a select few experienced volunteer ATV riders authority to persue and arrest.

I realize a few new bad a$$es will come around just to get chased and temporarily aggravate the situation, but if you permit confiscating the ATV and fines on top of that...

Here is the big one: Once the rebels are caught the good guys go away and stop riding where they aren't allowed too.

Sorry guys, but I have to agree w/ most of what's being said over there.

I have to agree with wallrat. I just dropped $375k on a piece of property. I spent all winter this year chasing off 3 dudes on Banshees.

After explaining the concept of "private property" and "personal injury liability", and the fact that I own quads and understand the need to ride, but all the while begging them all to find a more appropriate place to ride, I was called a "dick", I was told to "watch my back, 'cause I was gonna get fucked up" among other threats.

SO, I lazer leveled the property, installed six foot block walls and plastered the place with more "no trespass"signs.( all the ones I put up before this were torn down)

Yesterday, I recieved a complaint letter and a code ticket for " explicit graffitti"

Turns out, according to my new block wall, I am a *****, I'm in the KKK, and am affiliated with some sort of gang, because I have the letters "QCL" in 6 different places.

I have 60 days to paint over the graffitti before I get a $500 fine and a few days in the klink. I suspect the people who did the damage called in the complaint.

I have really lost alot of passion for the sport since having to deal with this, and I'm sorry to say, I agree the OHV crowd in large part is out of control. It's only a matter of time, now. Jackasses will destroy the sport for the rest of us.

what a bunch of winy bitches i would like to take my banshee and roost there *****get asses :yank:

Come and try it on my personal property, you god damn punk. I am tired of all you "fuckit" attitude types. Grow the hell up and post somthing worth reading, rookie. IT"S PEOPLE LIKE YOU.........

They have tried this at Little Sahara on the big weekends. They have 2-3 cops riding around on 400 EX's all weekend long. It seems like it works pretty well for the most part. They only have three major problems with it.

1. The cops on ATV's are outnumbered at least 1000 to 1 on those big weekends, which makes it impossible to cover everything that they need to. The majority of the weekend, these cops are basically just patroling to make sure there aren't any girls showing their tits, and handing out fines of a minimum of $100 to any that they catch doing it.

2. They need to quit getting the rookie cops to do it. You know the kind I'm talking about...They've got the high and tight haircut, and they're looking to bust anyone and everyone for anything just to prove that they're a hard ass.

3. They're on a 400 EX. If they think they're gonna catch someone out across the dunes if they decide to outrun them, they got another thing coming. :bolt:

i agree there are a lot of riders out ther making a bad name for the rest of us. rideing on privat property with out permision is wrong i dont care how you look at it. i live in an area real close to thousands of acers of public land. its not designated for atv use but has motorcycle trails that go all over and snomobile trails as well as 2 tracks. i ride my atv out ther even ran into the dnr a few times with nothing ever said been riding out there since i first started riding as a kid with my dad. there are quite a few of us in this area with atvs that go out there and never have any problems. then last month the cops show up at my door saying i was out tearing up the farmers feild down the road after showing them my banshee in peices ant that my other quads tires didnt match they left me alone. turns out it was the kids across the street thats twice they have caused problems for me. that and the guy who said it was me is the same person i have had problems with since he moved in hes just to chicken shit to come say something to my face. i can under stand some of the stuff the say i wouldnt want people runing across my property 1 they dont belong there 2 if the get hurt they can sue you when they were tresspassing. i dont know about you guys but m banshees loud and my sand rail is real loud i have to change pipes for the dunes. and i sure wouldnt want to listen to them all night. it sucks to quit rideing when your having fun but you have to show some respect for others other wise we will loose all of our areas to ride .

I read over that site and decided to give them a chance to elaborate on what exactly they're trying to do. It kinda seemed to me to be a tree-hugger's, shut all nature down to anyone trying to use it, liberal idiot. Here's the email I recieved.

William --

Thank you for your message. ORV Watch was organized to stop illegal

ORV abuse. We are not concerned about riders who stay in designated

ORV open areas or riders to stay on designated trails, but the

relentless trespass and damage, especially on holiday weekends by

people outside of the area, on both public and private lands.

We live in the Morongo Basin and suffer from abuse, trespass and

harassment constantly. Many law-abiding people, including ORV

enthusiasts riders, are fed up with the illegal riders. Last

President's Birthday weekend, illegal riding caused permanent damage

in officially designated wilderness areas right next to wilderness

boundary signs as if to say "I will ride wherever I want"

irregardless of the law. Hundreds of people in the Morongo Basin

regularly report riders encroaching on their private property. The

local Sheriff's Department is overwhelmed with ORV trespass

complaints and have asked for stricter laws to stop illegal riding.

Dozens of people have reported harassment by ORV riders who ride day

and night, trespass on their clearly marked land and have threatened

physical violence. ORV damage causes erosion, destruction of animals

and their habitat, denudes the land of vegetation and forces down

property values. This is not just a problem, but an epidemic.

We are trying to stop the abuse through cooperation with local law

enforcement, a new ordinance that will give law enforcement the tools

they need. We have been working with representatives from the ORV

industry who are as concerned as we are about those who are riding

illegally and irresponsibly since it makes people want to outlaw all

ORV activity.

I hope that you can help us to educate other riders to show respect

for neighbors, protect public lands off-limits to ORVs and obey no

trespassing signs.

thank you, Phil Klasky for Community ORV Watch

I was shocked, it actually sounds like this guy wants to just fix the problem, not shut the entire world down just to get his point across. I, really was speechless. It's the first time I've ever come across someone who seemed to have liberal/democratic beliefs, and still have common sense!!!
