more problems

to make it a short story, got project running, rode it for 10 minutes and it died, nut on flywheel wasnt tight and fell off,put it back on and she fired right up.

rode for a couple hours and it ran fine.

the next day took it out again , after 15 minutes she started to break up (poping out of tailpipe on left side) and overheating ,took it home did comp. test ,r side 140 psi, L side 10 psi.

took head off , hole in top of piston on left side ,( new top end) then i take clutch cover off and plastic impeller gear is broken in half, and what looks like a washer and c clip all bent up and mangled. came off the gear behind the clutch hub that goes to the kick start gear,

would the over heating problem do this to a piston ?

can i just change the bad piston ,the cylinder looks good .(top end has only 3- 4 hours ) ?

and do they after market impeller gear ,(not plastic)?

has this happened to any one else?

ProDesign makes an aluminum impellar, and you will have to get a new washer and c-clip. I'm not sure if the impellar going bad caused the hole in the pison, because I've never had the problem. Usually, a hole in the piston is caused from being lean. Maybe a plugged jet, or air leak.

Someone correct me if i'm wrong.

I'm going to say the impeller had nothing to do with your piston, but you would have melted it anyway without coolant circulating. I'm going to say you're better off getting the whole in your piston then having a melt down. The whole in the piston had to be caused by an airleak, or lean conidition as fast said. when you throw another top end on, double check all areas in the intake, fire it up let it idle and spray carb cleaner around all seals on the top end, if you hear it rev up, then you found your airleak, make sure you didn't forget a gasket somewhere... goodluck.

it also did not idle, should i do both pistons or just the one, top end has only few hours

Do both, because chances are you're going to need a bore from all the shit that blew off your piston, also I'd clean the bottom end out as much as possible when you got the top end off.. If it didn't idle, part of that could be because of the airleak or possibly your pilot jets were wrong, maybe your carb sync's were set wrong... there's a few things that could cause that. I'd get a fresh bore, order a new top end, clean the bottom end out(drain oil and use your gas/oil mix that you put in the gas tank to clean out the bottom end, then drain that as much as possible mix out of your cases). I'd also fill with oil, drain again, and fill with a good lower end oil. After you get the top end on, I'd worry about getting an idle, then leaks, then its time to ride again! :bolt:

There isn't really a need to "flush" the tranny side of the case, unless you are worried about contaminents if you're splitting the cases. The crankcase and tranny do not share any oil, so even if you scattered a piston none of this should be able to make it to the tranny unless you've got other, BIG problems.

 

As the others have said, I doubt the impellar had anything to do with the hole in the piston. Most likely an air leak.
