Crankcase oil

I'm sure you just mispoke (hopefully), but you shouldn't put any oil in the crankcase (premix remember). Now in the transmission, Yamaha recommends

10W-30, however, I know many people run Belray, or some other type of 80 wt oil. I personally run Havoline 10W-30 synthetic, which everyone says will ruin your clutch but I've run it now for quite some time and never had any ill effects.

go to the honda dealership and get there transmission/gear oil that comes in the red bottle with the squeeze top. Best oil I've ever run. Lasts for a good long time and its close to ATF, just more additives for the hardcore use its under.

I've gone through 3 top ends now (none premature), and the stock clutches are just starting to wear to the point that when I put my stroker crank in they wont hold up.

You're going to get a ton of answers here...might want to search around.

I personally have always run Bel Ray Gearsaver 80W in every two stroke quad and dirt bike transmission I've ever owned.

Some say ATF, it's cheap, you change it more often.

Some say don't use Synthetics, some say they are fine, some say different weight/viscosity fluids...

Everyone has an opinion on this one, there is NO clear cut winner.

It's like asking the best builder, best pipe, best tires, best pre-mix, hottest chick in the world...Ford vs. Chevy vs. Dodge....

It's all personal preference....period...

I'd search...gather your own info based on other's opinions...and start from there....

Best of luck...

If you compare 80Wt gear oil and 10-30Wt engine oil your comparing apples and oranges as far as oil weight #'s 10-30 wt engine oil and 80 wt gear oil are not all that different viscosity wise.

Gear oil has detergents designed to keep gears clean and lube clutch plates and the oil resists glase or get burned by clutch plates, engine oil has detergents designed to keep engine internals lubed and clean. They are not all that different in the tranny though as it doesn't have bearings like lead crank bearings and small oil passages like a 4 stroke engine and doesn't get as hot.

Just dont use engine oil with friction modifiers like Mobil 1 that are designed to reduce friction similar to a teflon additive. They can help your clutch slip easier.
