Kayleigh
i just recently got a honda 400ex and the first time i started it there was a popping noise. my dad decided to take off the baffle and ride it around and it sounded like an unhappy machine. he decided to give it to some buddies so it could get a check up and they decided to get a new stater. the thing is...i dont know wat that is or why we need it. my friend got frustrated because he said the quad didnt need all that work (they took it completely apart). my dad wont do anything other than wat he wants...so its too late to turn back now. i was just curious about wat might have been wrong. help me out guys so that next time i can look at it myself and avoid the surgical amputation my poor quad had to endure. oh yea, keep in mind that this quad was only ridden 3 times about a year ago. it sat around neglected and so we changed the oil. it was a day after that the popping noise occured. banshee tuner
Sounds like the carb might need cleaning, I've ridden one with aftermarket pipe and was not rejetted and it popped and surged bad. Could be the plug also and check the valve clearance. Air filter could need cleaning. Just spitting out ideas.

iceman
2 strokes > 4 strokes. did you make sure the air filter was clean? carbs cleaned? new gas? spark plugs? muffler packing? check that stuff. stators are somewhat expensive if i remember correctly. You'd think the coil would be more important than the stator if you were going "high performance" Check the bill to make sure they didn't put "high performance lug nuts" on your hubs. Back firing on a 4 stroke can be a few things like bad timing, or a timing adjustment needs to be made. Running lean such as a plugged carb/jet/etc. Also if the plug is cobbed with carbon it can glow and preignite the incoming fuel charge. If I remember correctly, if you have carbon build up on your valve it can do the same thing. Taking it to a dealer is the LAST thing you want to do. You know that bill will be 10x more than it would if you just did it yourself. Tools are cheap and the experience is invaluable.

1000dollabill
it's possible. it would create a lot of pressure inside the crankcase. it is possible to bend pushrods and connecting rods. both of those would give you a tick though. popping may be from blow-by caused by the overfill.
