Word to the wise, check with good ole sectretary of state to see if you have to title your bike to honor insurance policies. I had insurance on my shee all last year and found out that i basically pissed about 170 bucks away cause in Michigan you have to title your vehicle. That way uncle sam gets to line his pockets again and again! Can't even show them a bill of sale, they strictly go by Blue Book value. Six percent on 3450 for the 04 Shee and 3000 for an 88 250r! That adds to initial start up cost of insurance in Michigan  My carrier at the time, Progressive, didn't mention that when I started my policy.

thing with atv insurance as with any other insurance is they only pay the depreciated value.

ill give you guys an example.

i bought my banshee new in 06 for $5500. i put some mods on it and kept the reciepts. i have what $1000 in mods perhaps.when i called a few places to see about an insurance quote they would do it for $100-$500 a year, but only for the depreciated value. when i asked them what was the depreciated value of my 6 month old banshee they said about $2700.

so if my bike got stolen id only get $2700 back. non and a $500 deductable. so id only be getting $2200 back.

so would i bother to get theft insurance on a $2700 car? fuck no. why would i insure a $2700 banshee. the way i see it i have had my banshee for a year and a half and its not been stolen, so each year that it isnt stolen my decision to not have insurance pays off more and more. if i can just hold out for a few more years then it will have paid for its self by not having insurance.

the other thing is that i got some big fucking locks and chains and i lock my banshee up to the steel bar comming out of the ground in the middle of the garage. my garage has an alarm system that woulds a loud ass siren in the house. if someone opens the door without putting in the code on the keypad. the only entry point is the door.

i was also thinking of wiring up a gfci hot to the door, so that if someone touched the door without disabling the gfci it would shock the shit out of them before tripping the gfci.

in a nut shell, i havent found a company who will insure my banshee for a decent ammount and at a decent cost, so i became my own insurance company.

Hmmm...

I'm in MI, and have State Farm. My 96 last year (had title and everything) was 18 a month for FULL coverage.

I specifically told my rep that hey...blue book aint' gonna cover my losses if it gets stolen/wrecked....I got 8 to 10 K in it (my old 4 mil cub bike)

I specifically asked if I needed to carry a rider, etc. She said keep your receipts, and State Farm will take that into consideration should anything happen.

Not the concrete answer I was looking for...

I'm going to apply for a VIN and title for my bike soon....I've simply got too much invested to let some little punk steal it and walk....

I will walk into State farm with pictures and receipts showing that a few K won't cover the cost to replace my bike...

If they can't give me in writing the amount of coverage I want...I'll find someone who can!!!

Might want to look at a rider on the homeowners policy for theft, that's where mines covered and it's like an extra $30 per year and its covered for what I have into it. If I crash it, and walk away then the cost to replace parts is going to be cheaper than the insurance in the long run. If I crash it and don't walk away, well the shee is most likely the last thing on my mind.

daogejr, make sure they agree to a written insured value for the bike.

the most i could get anyone to insure my banshee for was $2700 and hell i got 6500 into it. but if you can get them to agree on a number (10 grand for instance) and they insure it for that value, then if it gets stolen youll get the money back.

but i couldnt find ANYONE who would do that for an atv. they do it for collector cars, etc though. my dads porsche is blue booked at 59 grand, but hes got 15 grand in hop ups into it. he for the insurance company to come out and take pictures and document the car and they agreed on a insured value of 73 grand.

but i dont know how you can get this done for an atv.

I appreciate the tip, Mel...

I will be sure to be armed with pictures, receipts...and similar priced bikes for sale on the internet, etc. as proof...

I won't pay a dime of insurance if it's not going to be covered....should anything happen.

I live in a good area...but that hardly means shit anymore!!! Anything can happen.
