building the engine, new port & nosshead

Recommended Posts

Alright, i just got my cylinders back from getting drag port and Im gonna start revbuilding the engine tomorrow. The upgrades that i am doing along with the port are as follow:

noss head

21cc domes

tors elimination

engine ice, upgrade from regular coolant

independent air filters, K&N

What do you guys have as tips or warnings when im putting it all together? Anything i will have a hard time with? What problems have you guys encountered? What about the jetting, how many sizes should I go up with these upgrades? What should i do to check for leaks? What should i do at start up and check for?

Anything would help, i just dont want to fu$k anything up.

thanks

If your drag port is a true drag port, you are going to want to go w/bigger carbs. That setup will work w/stock carbs, but you will never reach it's potential. I would go at least 34 mil PWK's when you get a chance. Other than that, get a Clymer Manual. I actually prefer the factory Maint. manual, you can get them at Rockymountainatv.com for $35. About half what Yamaha will charge you.

clymers all the way i have had my bike down to raw frame and rebuilt it just by that manual. I would suggest smaller domes on a drag port. 21 is kinda big. Be careful on torque specifications you can really fuck things up it you do it wrong. Also make sure your seals are sealed good or it will leak bad sending a ll your money on the port down the drain.

Aside from bigger carbs as said...depending on what pipes you have...you might want ones that breathe better too..

CPI and Shearer seem to be the most popular inframe drag pipes....

Of course...if you're not willing to go all out (which...you shouldn't have gotten a "drag port" if you're not) you might go with T5's, Paul Turners or some FMFs to keep a little bottom, albeit sacraficing a bit on top...

I'd ask the person who ported your cylinders for their recommendation on jetting. they won't be able to tell you exactly...but, they can probably get you within 2 sizes. Always error on the rich side for a new build....depending on your pipes, and if you keep the stock carbs, I'd say you'll be in the 350 Main range, depending on your temps and altitude, too.....
