Measuring the resistance on the stator

I have a Clymer repair guide and it says "measure the resistance between the pairs of leads" and it says "if the resistance is zero(short circuit) or infinite(open circuit) ,check the wriring to the coils".Does this mean the stator is not working if its at zero? Whats the resistance reading on the ohmmeter suppost to be at.I don't understand this, can some HELP ME! Thanks for your help.

unplug your stator plug ( white with 4 wires). You ohm the 2 striped wires and then go to the 2 solid color wires . One set should read about 117-120 ohms and the other set should ohm about 100 less like 17-20 ohms. If it reads much different or open then its prolly shot.
