Not Starting

Dinner

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone...I have an 87 banshee, and it takes a lot of fiddling with the choke, and kicking it over about 100 times before i finally get it going. If i take out the left spark plug and start it, it usually starts first kick, put it back in and i wont start.

I was on it tonight, stoped for a bit, let it idle then went to get moving again in first, stalled..then it wouldnt start after like 10 kicks so i tow started it and started right away.

Any ideas as is what the problem is is greatly appreiciated!...im thinking that its the carbs

Do you have good compression? At least 100 lbs or more. If you have good compression then move to spark. Of course try new plugs. Have your carbs had the bowls off of them? It is possible to swap sides on the bowls and they will not provide choke to the engine. The one is different then the other and doesnt have the same choke circuit. Toward the bottom on the side of the bowl, one of them has a little BB that looks like its shoved into the bowl . That one goes on the left side carb with the choke handle!

Check your reeds and intake boots. I had a boost bottle (came with the bike) that kept ripping the intake boot, wouldn't start without the choke on and I had to kick it 10-20 times. Once I fixed the intake boot and went back to the stock crossflow tube, the reeds went bad-same problem. Pull the reeds and look, if there is any gap between the reeds and the cage, flip them over or get new ones. Also, you have to look really close or take the intake boots off and look while pushing the little hole to see the cracks. I figured the ripped boot thing out the hard way, burned piston on the left, found the crack while tearing it down.

9/10 times if you cant start it within 5 good kicks your pilots are too lean.

The tow starting it and trying to take off after idle leads me to that conclusion. Try upping them a size, or clean them out if the problem just started.

*edit or an airleak too.

doubtful as it runs fine otherwise? If it is an airleak and it hasnt burnt up yet than youd be rich on the mains which keep it from overheating.
