TheBansheeMan86
howdy im gonna get my frame and hubs powdercoated and need to know everything i need to do to prep it. im gonna strip my bike down and grind off all the unneccasry tabs and large weld drips, etc but i dont know how to take out the steering stem bearing, and same with the hubs, how i should remove the bearings and seals without ruining them or if thats impossible, if its worth it to get new ones etc. im finding a place to get my frame blasted or dipped right now. once its done, do i have to do anything special to clean out the threads on my frame or hub lugs? like use tap/die to clean them out? plz any tips and tricks on this would greatly help. thanks. korndawg
As far as the bearings on the steering stem and hubs, my thoughts on that are pretty much that if you already have it tore down that far, go ahead and replace them to save yourself some hassle down the road. The best piece of advice I can give you on bearings, is DO NOT go order new bearings from the dealer. The best thing you can do, is to take your old bearings to your nearest bearing supply, or industrial supply house, and have them measure them and find you some new ones that way. No, it won't have the Yamaha name on them, but sometimes you can get better quality, and it is almost always MUCH cheaper. As far as cleaning out bolt holes, a tap/die works great. sand4ever
Make sure you really go over the frame. When I had mine powdercoated I missed some of the splatter that the factory welds leaves. Also if you weld up the holes for the front motor mounts or the front bumper, make sure that you do a really good job of filling. Otherwise when they bake the pc you will have small holes from the fill melting out. Last tap and die will be your best friend. Do all of the bolt holes then air blow them out and repeat. Remember you only want to do the pc once and do it well!!I would also second on replacing all the bearings since you are there. Check Ebay out for a bearing kit that includes all hub bearings including seals the steering stem bearings and seal and the swing arm and carrier bearings as well. I bought mine for @ $60.00 Good Luck

kb7kuh
I just had mine powder coated and removed all the tabs I didn't need. They pluged all the threaded holes. I did have to use a dremel tool to clean out some non threaded holes but it was easy. It turned out great !!!! Duner440
I went through TRG coating to have my powder coating done. I sent two frames, two sets of cases, two sets of cylinders, and some other misc parts for my Banshee. When I talked to him on the phone he told me it would be a two week turn around. I sent them out to him Nov. 13th. Two weeks went by and I heard nothing from him. I am a pretty patient person so I gave him the benifit of the doubt and waited. Finally I called him and had him send everything that was done back to me. I got those parts back at the end of Dec. He said he was waiting on the machine shop to pull the studs out of the cases before those would get done. So patiently I waited. After a few weeks I called and he would not return my phone calls or emails. I finally got my cases back a couple of weeks ago. He didnt send me any of the case studs or cylinder studs back. Once again called and called with no return calls. The frames are beat to shit with the powder coat chipped off in places and scratched. On one of the frames the headlight brackets were bent over. Everything has sand or something in the powder coat. I spent $1400.00 with this guy and I am very unhappy. I would suggest that you are very carefull and do your research before sending anything out. Try to find someone locally so that if something goes wrong you can go check it out. I looked in the forums on this site and a few people suggested TRG. I am from Kansas and sent them clear to New Jersey for him to do the work with shitty results.
fastbanshee8
Since you live in Kansas, give Bontrager Powder Coating in Hutchinson, Kansas a call. I've had them do some parts, and a friend had his whole frame done. I think it cost him about $350, and that included swinger, a-arms, pegs, steering stem, basically the whole chassis.
