For Those with Shearer or CPI's

Recommended Posts

For those of you who have shearer pipes and an aftermarket head, how do you keep the pipe from rubbing and gouging up the coolhead and or pipe on the left side? My friend has these and it appears there is a clearance issue.

For those of you with CPI's & angled pods how do you keep them from melting your outerwears on your carbs? It appeas there is a clearance issue for people with pods, even angled ones.

Looking for trading my Fatties for something else, leaning towards CPI's so far but don't want to have to go buy new outerwears every weekend. Do CPI's have more mid response than Shearers?

I enjoy doing wheelies around bowls and trying to hold them up hills like olds and would ate to ruin my fun to just go a bit faster :)

On the Shearers you just stick a couple washers between the mount and frame, this will give you enough clearance to keep it from hitting the head. It would take a fairly close examination for anyone to know that they are even there.

On CPI's, the best way we have found to keep from burning a hole in outerwears is to wrap the stinger, where it contacts the filter, a couple times with header wrap and use exhaust tape to hold the wrap in place. Its a tedious process but it works.

Cpi's and Shearer have about the same mid-top power with the Shearers revving out just a tad further. CPI's definitely have more bottom tho and are easier to ride. When the Shearers come on, its an eye watering, thrill a minute experience.

Both are good exhaust systems, and make hella difference over FMF.

i made my own pipe hangers so i bent them so they wouldn't let the pipe rub. the left side is the only one i had a problem with. at first i spaced it with washers. but then i just wanted something nicer lookin. so def go with the washer route and think about gettin some stainless or something and bendin ur own on a vice or something like i did.

Well I got some time, I'm leanming towards the CPI's since I like to haul ass through dunes more than drag race. I like the finish on them better also.

But I'm not sure how my passion 350 motor would react to Big Bore CPI's...(untill I get my 4 mil cubs) and I'm not crazy about the stingers rubbing my pods...Even wrapped I think they would be pressing into the filters pretty good.

Spacing with washers sounds better, gotta love the way the Shearers clear the angled pods so much better...

I ran CPI's until last week, and just used a long zip tie around both filters and through the shock mount to hold them in and down.

I'm switching to shearers with my cub, but with mixed emotions. I don't expect to be faster up the hill, but I do expect a funner ride. My CPI's pulled very hard off the line, and I'm afraid I'll be losing some of that, but make up for it pulling through the gears.

justin, my rocket stinger tubes rest on my filters. with the header wrap on them there is no problem. i use hose clamps at each end to keep them in place..header wrap does a nice job of keepin them from gettin burnt..no issues whatsoever..

I have tried using rubber bands to keep the pods from hitting my Fatties, I put one aroudn both pods and by the end of the trip they had worn holes in both outerwears from rubbing together.

I know the shearers make mroe on top and I know they pull hard when you gt on the pipe as I rode my friends banshee with them and he has the smae porting. What I did not like was the loss of mid and lowend which I wwould miss.

The quality of the CPI pipes themselves is more impressive to me, and I can probably get a better deal on them also.

So with a 4 mil larger bore cub I should be looking for a small bore CPI still?

Loco where do you get the header wrap?

I'm not sure about the cheetah cubs if you would still want to go with the small bore pipes. I had a buddy of mine that tried running the big bore pipes on a 410 big bore kit, and he never could get it to run right. He switched over to the small bore pipes, and the bike runs great. CPI's recommendation is that you don't run the big bore pipes on anything smaller than a 440, but if you want you can contact them at:

Well I talked to my friend and he says the Big Bores are the way to go with the 4 mil cub, it may not be a 440 but it would sure flow alot more than a 440 with stock cylinders.

Of course he's gonna say BB's are best, he has them. The small bores are the way to go on the cubs. I have a friend who owns a set of BB's and they are a pain in the ass to mount, the filters are in high danger of being scalded and I really don't think it runs as good as my brothers with small bores. Both bikes are running 4 mil cubs with 35mm carbs.

I hope some other pipe options become available for cubs this winter. I want more bottom than what the shearers provide, but can't stand the looks or hack looking welds on the CPI's. Not too many options out there at this point though.

what difference do you notice? I may be going with a 7 mil cub if I have the extra cash when the time comes. Are you running 35mm Air Strykers? Anything else the bikes have that are different?

I actualy think the CPI's look better than the Shearers :whoa:
