Starting Flat tracking

Recommended Posts

We've started running the local flat track here and have done pretty well. I'm taking the role of "crew chief" for my brother.

What i'm looking for is things that make the quad handle better and i just have a few of a million questions for the future.

Can the rear end gear be changed quickly?

Is there a tach available? What is redline on a shee?

Is there a better clutch system so you can shift mid-corner and not have to reach so far?

How do you read flat track dirt tires exactly? I'm looking to eventually run 4 different sizes to get the right stagger.

We've strapped the suspension and built some adjustablility there but i'd like to know if there are different springs/shocks that work for each end. For the rear i'd like something low but really soft for weight transfer off the corner. The left front i want something very low and soft and the right front i need something stiff (this is beyond the built in adjustments)..

Let me know if you can help.. Money is a big object here so there wont be much high dollar billet stuff i can afford.

Thanks

Rear end is simple as changing the rear sprocket... 3 tooth on the rear equals one up front..... There are tachs. available.... not real sure why it's neccessary.... I don't know anyone that staggers there tires..... durablue makes a lowering kit for the front and an adjustable lowering strut for the rear... lonestar racing (LSR) makes a sway bar for up front also (almost a requirement to be competitive).... Through a magura hydroulic clutch on there if you want a smooth easy pull that wont fade.... proquad101(on here) races flattrack and I think he's quite good.... im sure he'll hit this thread up when he sees it....

strapping the quad down is an easy fix but your alot faster..if you lower it right so you have suspension and not bounce all over the track..if you wanna pm i'll give a a few budget race tips.. i jusr race maybe 2 times a yr so i dont go all out but i have several trophys for my work...

Where do you guys race at? I will help you try to answer some of your questions. Both sprockets are pretty easy to change, you will need to get a few front and rear sprockets like a 13-16 and 39-42 will cover everything. I have never had any luck with running stagger in my tires, the banshee is not heavy enough to really get an advantage from it like a micro or sprint car. I have never liked to strap my banshee down I use my shocks to adjust the hight of the bike, I have couple of sets of shocks and it depends on how the track is on my shock choice. I have a afco rear shock with a no-link -3.5 lonestar swing-arm, the shock is compression adjustable for weight transfer . The dura-blue sway-bar works great and it is a must. Hope I answered your questions if not let me know how I can help you.

Well we race at Borgers in PA here. Its a 7th mi thats basically flat. I watched very closely for awhile and it looks like alot of guys have trouble carrying the left rear in the corner and they are leaning so far over for weight transfer. I've started correcting the problem on ours so he didnt have to lean so far. Having a smaller left rear would definetely help here though. I strap the left front so it tilts into the corner but he carries it in the air from 3/4 turn off which makes the weight all go to the right front and he slides the back end since it pivots to hard (hurting his launch off the corner).

So essentially i want to get a rear shock/spring that is soft enough to completely collapse when he gets traction off the corner (so it wants to lift the front end) and get a left front shock that is very low but doesnt have alot of travel.

Are gears tough to change? I know the karts use the split style but i didnt take notice to see if ours are like that.

The reason i ask about the tach is so i can tell if the engine is overrevving or underrevving at the end of the straightaway. We only really run this track so i want to have one solid gear setup to build the setup off of. And i'd really like to have him be able to shift going into the corner so he has the power off of the corner the 2 smokes seem to lack. He probably could shift but the handle is so far up that he'd never stretch his hand during the thick of the race to grab it. Plus the cable needs alot of travel to disengage the clutch (any tips for shorter travel?)

I know alot about how to set up a 4 wheeled vehicle on dirt. For some reason i just understand how everything works in harmony. And when i went the first night and saw all the kids almost flipping over because they had big wide rears and all the same pressures in the tires i saw a huge opportunity.

Thanks for the help..
