I picked up one of those fences where you bury the wire throw the collar on your dog and when she gets close to it it beeps, than when she gets even closer it zaps the shit outta her. Well She is a Husky and needless to say I let her out right after installing it, left the gate open( purely by accident I swear) she bolted to it, ZAP ZAP YELP YELP, well that happened twice she doesn't even approach an open gate anymore, but also she doesn't run around the yard and play fetch at all. She used to play till it wore you out. I'm kinda disappointed in that, anyone else used one? Did your dog come back to its usual spunk when it got used to the boundaries? I have the boundary width small, maybe 6inches from the wire. 2inches further out the collar beeps. Give/take a little its a 20%/80% split, beep/shock area. I'd like to do the training it showed in the video, but hell I can't get her anywhere near the flags to attempt it. She just bolted through it then would be stuck out not wanting to get shocked to get back in. anyway my sisters dog was doing like yours and it took about a month for it to learn that the fence shocks and not the whole backyard. dawarriorman Posted October 28, 2005 Report Share Posted October 28, 2005 My neighbor trains dogs for a living, and I asked him about those once. It helps at first if you have a visual reference for the dog (like the flags), that way they learn to associate the flags with the boundary with the shock. Slowly take flags away so the spacing between them is bigger, and then take them all away. I haven't had those fences myself, so I don't know much more than that. y2kbanshee9187 Posted October 28, 2005 Report Share Posted October 28, 2005 Yea, we just got one about a month ago. It works pretty well. We have a part Anatolian Shepard and part Purinese dog. He has just ran right through it about 4 times but that was only when he was chasing groundhogs out of our yard or saw other animals.. His instinct was to kill em so he goes after them unitl he gets em whether that means running through the fence or not. We walked him around the borders for about a week so he would know. He is doing ok with it but we have a big yard and my moms boyfriend lives 2 houses down and owns the one in between so we put the fence around all 3 big yards. Then when she starts giving you lip, walk out of the room. She tries to follow you POW. She tries to yell at you as you walk through the house POW. Damn, we need to start selling these. I got an english setter that would'nt listen when I took her out in the feild. Strapped the shock collar on her and after she got her first zap, she learned to listen real quick. broke Posted October 29, 2005 Report Share Posted October 29, 2005 We have one for our English Mastiff. The training was the most important part. Unfortunately on whatever setting, my dog would just wander across the line. It took a while, walking, installing flags, removing them. But now our underground fence doesn't even work anymore and she won't leave the yard even to chase something. Instead of the pain of the zap, which she obviously didn't mind, it was just a reminder to her that she was nearing the line that we taught her was the end of her yard. But, it's still a loose dog. I love when somebody comes to the front door and sees my dog running toward them which really does look like a scene from Turner and Hooch.
