Bansh88
I saw this posted a while ago. lookin for the opinions again. Whats the best "break in" method for a new Banshee? Wouldit make a difference to break it in while stock or with aftermarket parts on like pipes and carb?
i12gofast
Youre gonna get tons of opinions, but i go by this: Take it easy for 1 whole tank. Let it warm up, ride it for a little bit, let it cool down, repeat process for the whole tank. My experience, its enough for all the tolerances to settle in, and i havent had a problem yet doing that after 3 yearly rebuilds....but everyone has their own method. AS for aftermarket parts, well, youre not actually breaking in the exhaust or carbs, its the motor (pistons, rings, gaskets etc) that "breaking in" refers to, so dont worry about when you break it in, or what ya got bolted to it. Just take it easy at first, and you shouldnt see a problem. Have fun, take chances, go fast!
DUNEDEMON
Bansh, stock or aftermarket parts will make no difference. Mix the first tank fat, and heat cycle the shit out of the thing, by that I mean start the bike let it warm up for a few minutes, during warm up DO NOT rev the shit out of the thing. Ride it easy until it reaches normal operating temp, keeping the RPM's cycling up and down, then let the bike cool off to as close to stone cold as possible, then repeat. 5 - 6 heat cycles, change the oil, check the coolant, adjust the chain, check clutch cable adjustment, fill the tank with your mix of choice (40:1 is a good starting point) and let it rip. This procedure has never let me down.
ssanddemon
The only thing I would add to DUNEDEMON's list is to retorque the head nuts. Heard that some of 'em will end up being loose after the heat cycles causing head gasket seepage. And it wouldn't be a bad idea to pull out every screw you see and reinstall with anti-sieze. Lots of guys are finding over tightened & seized bolts straight from the factory, though they were all OK on mine when I got it home in '03. sandman
You'll definately want to check for LOOSE bolts also especially around the plastic. My 05 was full of loose plastic bolts & footguard bolts (not footpeg thankfully).
Justintoxicated
I mix my first few tanks with extra oil like 24 to 1 for break in (with yamalube) ....and keep it under 3/4th throttle for a couple tanks. Then I switch it to a full synthetic oil after that You want those tranny gears to break in right, thats most important.... Topend can always be re-done but splitting he case can be a bitch.
