bobbybonilla
My buddies got a set of T5's he has been running for awhile now. Im guessing maybe 20 hours (rough guess) They are starting to turn blue right around the front of the engine. Some say this is normal, but some say no. Is there anyway to get rid of the coloring? What would cause the coloring?
bigboybanshee
It is VERY common and doesn't mean there is a problem. Mine blued up to about 6 inches from where it mounts to the cylinders. They blue due to the heat. I don't think I've ever seen a set of Toomeys not blue around the base of the pipe, it's really common, I wouldn't worry about it. Once the blue has set in, it's hard to completely remove it, if at all. I discovered that using an SOS pad and scrubbing it (will NOT scratch the chrome) , then following up with some chrome polish will remove a good bit of it, but after a couple rides it'll be right back. I just gave up and let is stay blue...lol
350TwinDeathBed
I've seen the same thing on my Fattys. So the SOS pads won't scratch the chrome??
locogato11283
ive never had a set of chrome pipes blue. some will say this is a lean jetting problem, which could be partly true if the pipes get too hot...how is your jetting?? the whole blueing problem seems wierd to me because in 4 sets of chrome pipes between me and my bro, weve never had a set blue...this is 2 sets of t5s and our rockets now... I was a bit skeptical but went ahead and tried it out, worked awesome. If you've ever melted your pants to the pipe it'll get that off too. ive never had a set of chrome pipes blue. some will say this is a lean jetting problem, which could be partly true if the pipes get too hot...how is your jetting?? the whole blueing problem seems wierd to me because in 4 sets of chrome pipes between me and my bro, weve never had a set blue...this is 2 sets of t5s and our rockets now... 415798[/snapback] You guys must not be running them hard enough!! Do you ever ride your banshees for extended periods of time; like 3-4 solid hours or more? I'm wondering if that might have something to do with it...I'm thinking maybe the long periods of riding and staying hot is what turns them blue, I'm not sure though. My jetting was always spot on when I had my T5's and they blued like a champ My average ride time was 4-5 hours though before the pipes had a chance to cool down. Banshee~
Ive had my fmf sst's for 6 months and no blueing or turning gold at the base at all. Mine is jetted on the rich side also, so id say you might try a size bigger on the main jets. Someone on here said there was some stuff that you can get at any harley davidson store that will remove the blueing. BTW ive rode for 3-4 hours streight before at the dunes many times. bobbybonilla
Hes running 280 mains, with airbox lid on, and toomey filter. We usually ride a couple of hours each time, sometimes open fields, gravel, then other times trails, just all around. I think some of the blueing is coming from the oils on your hands when installing the pipes. Because he hasnt had them very long, and I dont believe he cleaned them right after install, and you can kinda see where his fingerprints where if you look hard, and it seems to be more concentrated around those finger prints. I dunno?? The other day at the Honda/Yamaha shop, they had some stuff called "Blue Job" it came in alittle white tub, and was for motorcycles, supposedly it removes the blue, but it was 11 bucks for alittle jar so I said f it. Big Blue
My t6's turned blue about 4 inches from the cylinder and that is where it stopped.

Blue Job is what I was talking about, someone on here said that it took it off. The oil off your fingers might have caused it, but I whiped mine down real good before I started it the first time because of that.
87TwoStrokeShee
My T-5's are blue also after 5 hours of ridding on a new set of pipes and the Girls TR6's are blued after just 12. The other day at they Yamaha Dealer she bought some stuff call "Blue Job". It works. It turns the pipes back to normal color with Minimal scratches. IT really dont look bad. And since then we rode this weekend and for a long period of time 6 hours in the trails and NO BLUEING yet.
2003LimitedBanshee
My T-5's are blued for about the first 4-5" just after the flange. I know that it is not from the oil on my hands after the install because I wore latex gloves when installing the pipes just to combat that problem, and wiped them down after just to make sure. If you look at most chrome pipes on cars, bikes, whatever they will almost all have some blueing. It's a pretty normal response of chrome from the heat. My guess would be that those that aren't blueing are running too rich. I've got mine spot on, and it definitely is not lean. After an hour plus of hard continuous riding this weekend I ran 6-8 full throttle drags against some people, back to back to back... If it was lean I would have stuck it for sure... It's normal in my opinion, plus it shows others you ride it, I will probably leave mine as a warning to others.
