Losing Races

My current jetting is stock pilot, needle in stock position, 310 mains. Now the power feels good and the bike really punches with the mods below, but I am having some issues. When I race other bikes.. doesnt really matter which bike (raptors or yfz450's) for some reason I always take them off the line by about 1 bike length, but then they start to pull up on me really quick and pass me, and then finally when I hit about 5th I start to pull up on them again but by that time the races is pretty much over. Now I am pretty new to dragging the shee, so I am sure 60% of my problem is rider error, but its getting pretty frustrating. So I am thinking possibly I have a jetting issue. Any ideas on the jetting... the mid range kind of sputters so I am going to bump the clip down a notch.

PS. My WOT plug chops look good.

I would agree with moving your clip down one notch to richen your midrange up a little. I might even go 27.5 pilots w/your mods, especially if you are running w/your airbox lid off. And remember, the 450's, and even the raptors w/limited mods are no slouches. You may want to thing about bumping your compression up a hair to give you a little more power in the the low to mid range.

SST are not good with porting...well better than stock...but not as good as Fattys.

I would not expect to beat any modded 450's with that setup.

What gearing are you running? If your Sand Dragging you might try switching to a 13 tooth, practicing starting in 2nd...that should get you into 5h faster

The guy at FAST racing said he did a play/dune port on a banshee with sst's and it screamed. Im running stock gears,20in sandstars, and starting out in 2nd in the sand. BTW, I think fatties and sst's are the same pipe, but they moved the sst pipe clamp back and made some kind of wave deals in there :shrugani: .

If your still running the stock clutch, then I'd start there first. I swapped all my mods from my '95 chassis to a '00 chassis and motor. Everything but the clutch..the '00 only had about 15-20 hours on it, so the clutch was fairly new...It wouldn't hold any of the mods. I only had Pt mids, 165psi head mod, K&N, and +4 timing at the time...I never knew the clutch was slipping until I raced my buddy w/ a raptor and he's a shitty rider. Changed my clutch and toasted him....I would think your jetting should be very close, maybe 1-2 sizes rich, but it depends on your shee and area. Make sure you run w/o the lid or cut the last 1.5" off the end of the lid..when you dragrace, don't let off the throttle, hold it wide open and just feather the clutch to shift. Kinda tug on the handlebars and throw you weight back as you shift to get the weight to the rear tires like you were going to do a wheelie. You should be able to beat them w/ what you got...getting out the hole is the hardest part, especiallly the 450.

The stock clutch should be fine for 50HP bikes. At most you should only need to alternate some stiffer springs. My bike is 80HP and I ran a stock clutch with 3 toomey springs with no splippage.

I think one of the guys above hit it right though. Gearing and tires make a huge difference in drag racing. To me it sounds like that is probably your culprit. I always had the hardest time with the starts. Those 450's hook up so nice, that they'd get me a couple of lengths at the start and I'd have to reel them in to beat them. Now, I just start in 2nd and stay in front the entire time.

I would recommend the cool head and maybe some V-force reeds and possibly a gearing change too. A play port will do wonders and they will prolly need chest protectors to keep your roost off of them! Pm me if have any questions or need anything!!

P.S. BTW, FMF SSTs DO work good with mild porting!! :P:bolt:

It may be your jetting or it may be(like you said) rider error. That's not saying anything bad about you.I've been racing for a while and my racing skills still needs ALOT of improving. If the 450's have mods it will be tough for you to beat them.Especially if they have more riding experience.Practice,practice,practice.One of my friends has a banshee with Pro-curcuits and K&N filters and he has trouble with the 450's too. He's a pretty good rider but the 450's are faster than you might think.Like some have said, porting makes a HUGE difference. The bolt-ons just help a little.Make sure if you start making it faster that the gearing is right and the tires can handle it.I went to a dragstrip last night and I might as well been racing on ice.First and second was nothing but spin, spin, spin.Time to upgrade.IMPORTANT LESSON:power is great, but it's useless if you can't put it to the ground.I'm learning that lesson right now.Don't forget about the clutches, gearing, and tires.

I wouldn't think the Raptors should be much of a problem for you, but the 450's are damn fast. A buddy of mine has a 450 with a filter, jet kit, and he gutted the stock silencer. If he jumped me out of the hole I pretty much had no chance of getting around him. If you haven't already, definitely drop to a 13 tooth on the front, you'll hit the pipes that much quicker and you'll be amazed. Also, if you feel pretty confident at your shifting, speed shift it. I was dragging over at the Oregon dunes this weekend and my clutch stood up to 6-8 drags right after another without any noticeable fade; so I would doubt it would be the clutch getting overpowered, especially if it is not right out of the hole. But like others have said don't expect to cover those 450's until you start dumping some more serious money into the motor, I know I was somewhat surprised when I didn't hand my buddy his ass.
