Fast Dune Bike - Cubs, or Ported Stock Jugs

Recommended Posts

I currently have a stock motor with Toomey pipes, K&N filters, advanced timing, etc. Pretty much all bolt on stuff.

I want a fast reliable dune bike, but also like the occasional race up the hill with my buddies.

I was going to get a new top end and do some port work, then started hearing and reading lots of good stuff about the new Cheetah Cub cylinders, and how they can be used with my stock components.

Would a stock bore Cub motor (using all my other stock stuff) be better, faster or more reliable than porting my stock jugs? I'm on a fairly tight budget, that's why if I end up going with the Cubs, I would have to use my stock components for now.

Any info or suggestions you guys have would be great.

Thanks.

If you are going to pay for the porting you would be ahead to buy the cubs. From what I have seen you can pick the cubs up with the nikasil for around 875. If you port your stock cylinders you are probably going to have 400 or 500 in the porting and you will still have to buy new pistons. And I don't think you will have the reliability that the cubs have since they are nikasiled. Just my .02

I have a 4mill 68 bore cub and I love it!! this thing rips and I have no problem riding it slow it is nice and mild tempered antill the pipe comes on, then its like getting kicked in the ass by a mac truck!!!! I would never consider porting stock jugs after riding a set of cubs.

as far as the clutch goes, I would just buy a F.A.S.T. clutch and not worry about it anymore, I am running right around 100 hp with no lock up on my clutch and I have never got it to slip!!

I see a consensus between your planetsand and bhq replies. Now go get you a set of cubs and be done. Really though I don't think a set of stock cylinders can match the cubs with out some extensive porting. Then your still without nikisil plating and the advanced cooling capacity. The decision wasn't hard for me and my last motor was still new.
