main jet question

I have a 2001 Banshee.i bought it at the end of june. it is not only my first banshee, it is also my first quad. my friend convinced me to get it. when i got it, it was very hard to start and ran like crap. i read posts on banshee hq and did research to find out i was running lean. my banshee is mostly stock except for a boost bottle and k&n air filter, i don't think anything else was done to it. the original main jets were 200, pilot jets 25 and the needle at the third position and the air screws 2 turns out. i bought a k&n power lid. it came with 340 and 350 main jets. i followed the instructions and installed the 350 and put the needle to the fifth position all according to the instructions with the power lid.i ran it after that and it ran really good. no bogging or hesitiation when i opened it up. there was still some hesitiation on take off, like 1/4 throttle and hard to start. adjusting the air screws didn't have any effect. i have now installed 35 pilot jets and a tors elimination kit. the machine starts on the first kick without giving it any throttle and idles fine. i haven't had the chance to run it yet, i will this coming week end. my question after all this is why does my machine run good with the 350 main jets? i don't have aftermarket pipes. i read on banshee hg guys with lots of engin mods are running 300 or less.it seems that my machine should be running way too rich, but was running great. i ride in fosterdale ny which i think can't be more than 1500 altitude and the temp has been 85 or better. any information would be greatly appreciated. keep in mind i have only ridden it three times so far but my friend has had a banshee for years so he has a base to compare my performance against. thanks.

Be sure on your elevation, first off.

 

340 is WAY too rich for a stock piped banshee with an airbox.

No F'in way....

 

Unless you live below sea level and ride in -50 degree temps, and 340 would still be rich.

With stock pipes, an airbox still on, aftermarket lid and filter...at your elevation and temps, I'd say 220 to 250 Main...at the most.

Stock pilot at 25 is fine. Air screws about 1.0 to 2.0 turns out from the lightly seated position, and needle in the middle clip.

 

The only way that motor is going to run fine with 340s is if it is beyond worn out and has an air leak the size of Texas somewhere....

 

35 pilots are WAY too rich for pilots too....

Something else is wrong.

 

With my mods in my sig, (not much...but more than yours) I'm at 330 Main and 27.5 pilot, needles 4 clip down (Dyno Jet Needles with 6 grooves) and 2.25 out on the air screws.

 

There is just no way that bike is running correctly with that pilot and main set in there. YOu could darned near run alcohol with those jets on a stock bike...(Ok...well...maybe not...:)

 

Something is wrong...and being this is your first quad, let alone first banshee...you need to get it to a shop and have them go over it to make sure you don't hurt yourself or the motor....

you should be at 250 - 280 mains if that with no pipes

 

with pipes you should be at 340ish probably smaller

 

 

also thought 30 was teh biggest pilot you could get for stock carbs

 

 

if you bike starts with no choke adn first kick your rich on the pilot, i would put the stock pilot back in

 

 

my guess stock pilots, 3rd clip 260 mains for what you claimed

Either you have the most unique banshee ever made....or, it's because it's your first quad.

 

Look at the pinned article on top of this page for how to do a plug chop.

If you follow that to a T, with those main jets and the plug is just as it should be, then I'll be a believer....

 

There is just no way a stock piped banshee will need mains higher than a 300 at most....unless you were riding in freezing temps below sea level...and even then I think it'll be rich.

 

You sure those are 340 and not 240?

Thats kinda what I was thinking. When I still had stock pipes I put a 2:1 filter and shaved the head. I went from 200 to a 250. After getting T-5's and some different reeds along with some port work I'm still only at about 320 with the needle in the 2nd richest position. I went to Dumont (near sea level and 85 degrees) and I was running a 410 main.
