I have heard 20 and it seems like over kill to me.

I'm talking about a shee with the normal bolt ons and trail / mx porting if it makes a difference.

I wanted to see what every one thinks

20 hours!!! DAMN!!!

Ive seen stock bikes with just pipes and air filters go for like 7 years!

I go by comp readings and right now Im at 165 so when I get down to 110/100 Ill rebuild or when I blow it up on a monster hill climb!

I think there's way too many variables to say X number of hours or tanks of fuel, even as a rule of thumb. I agree that compression is the best indicator, along with a little common sense. I put 140 hours on my '96 before I started to see lower compression, I re-ringed it and got another 60 hours before I hung a ring on the exhaust port. So for me, under normal circumstances, I'll re-ring between 40 and 50 hours and topend between 80 and 100 hours as preventative maintenence, unless I see lower compression along the way...

:D Good to hear that I don't need to be concerned about my topend for a while.

I changed domes yesterday and went ahead and pulled the jugs to look at the pistons and rings. At 30-40 hours The pistons still look very good.

If its not broke dont fix it :)

What are you recommending? That we wait untill a piston skirt comes apart and turns a $250.00 topend rebuild into a crank replacement or more.

I had it happen, not fun to go without riding for months :cry:

A two bit mechanic with a screw driver, 12mm socket and a tourqe wrench should be able to pull the jugs and put them back in 6 hours, easy.

Makes me feel better!

my RZ is 18 years old and has 8000 miles on it..... and its still running on the stock bore and pistons.   I have never checked the compression on it, it runs great and starts up on 1 or 2 kicks.

I was walking down the street yesterday and here comes a motorcycle up from behind me. I think "hey, that motor sounds familiar" It went by and it was a sweet RZ350. Cool!
