i think im gonna try to move into my dorm next tuesday. im moving from oklahoma city (dead center of the state), but stilly is NE of there so it will be about a 2.5-3hr drive. but only 90 minutes from lil sahara, too bad ill have to go back to my parents house and pick up my quad. so now LS is a 3 hour trip instead of a 2 hour trip. <_<

Wow, I spend one day at a motocross track, and look what happened to this post while I was gone :headbang: . Thanks for all the great information everyone. Seriously, this is great, it really helps.

Chipdog, that is one sweet looking Banshee you've got there. Are those +2/+1 a-arms you've got? What brand are they?

Sredish, thanks for the list, that sounds about perfect to me. Where should I look to find the suspension mods?

I should have spent the day finding out how far my Banshee will go on a tank of gas, because I suck pretty bad on my KTM at motocross. When my son on his YZ125 asked me why I had gone down in the whoop section, I told him "I was regaining control", LOL. banghead

Deffinatly suspention!!!, A stock shee motor w/pipes and jetting on a chassis that works will take you far, or if its in the budget try to find a complete RZ350 engine, same as the shee but w/ power valves, it tacks on about 20 hp and has a high watt starter, Dean Sundahl himself took this combo to the winners circle a couple of times.

I'd go to Lonestar for a-arms. There are quite a few others, but I'm not sure how many of them make long travel for the banshee, but I'd most definitely go the extra mile for the longer travel if your desert racing. Houser is good, Quicksand is good, but they're more duning than racing, there's a bunch of mfg's. ARS/FX, JRD, the list keeps going.

I'd give TCS Racing a ring for your shock needs, www.tcsracing.com. He's pretty amazing with his shocks setup, plus his prices are a little more affordable over the big buys. But, you can't go wrong with Axis, Elka, TCS, Ohlins, they're all good, just be sure to get the valving right. Todd @ TCS is a master in the valving, just be specific with what you want.

Let us know what other questions you have.

i can ride a good 1 to 1.5 hours riding with my +4 stroker with stock tank so a good ported shee    drinks fuel.  i would suggest the huge tank for your racing

thats it  i built one of my buddy's shee with a 400 stroker crank, .30 over bore, trinty 2 into 1 carb, wisecos(sp) and a pro design cool head with 22cc domes and it get about 5 hrs or so, we had the stock carbs on right after the rebuild and could ride for more then 2 hrs and the tank would be completely dry(like u had just bought it brand spanking new)

i think the -2 swinger works great for the desert or open riding, the longer chassis cant take the obsticles as fast as the shorter one can.....great shocks help and a butt load of lowend horsepower dosnt hurt, and a scotts (not denton) steering stabilizer is a must

One of the longer races I was at recently was 32 miles, we did two loops and I made it 64 miles without pitting with my 5.5 gal IMS tank. That's stock carbs, piped, no porting, and the track was about 50/50 between technical trails and wide open areas. Guys on my team with stock tanks had to pit but would have made about 40 miles easy, mine might have made 70 or so.

Everyone else pretty much summed it up, alot depends on the course but the basics are the same; full skidplates (PRM makes damn good ones), reinforced rims (beadlocks aren't really a necessity), tall tires (I like 23" front & 20" rear Holeshot XC's), good suspension, steering stabilizer, big tank, tether, camelback, etc.

If it's not to tight & technical get it as wide as you can with extended a-arms and axle. No matter what you can't spend too much on suspension, besides physical conditioning no single thing (even motor) will make a bigger difference (don't forget gearing!). Keep in mind you want reliability to finish the race, and time spent in the pits refueling is tough to make up...

Thanks for that information BenBB, that is exactly what I was looking for. I'll have to see how far my Banshee will go with me riding it to be sure, but our courses sound a lot like what you have. Being able to go 70 miles would be overkill, so maybe I can get by with a 4 gallon tank.

gimmeabeer,

I've raced more desert races than I have post on this forum; still asking for input from other racers though. It can't hurt.

Desert Racing.

good mid-high port job with a set of T5's

long travel front end a must for high speed desert

+2 swinger with long travel linkage

skid plates a must

oversize fuel tank a must

oversize radiator is a good idea

Noss-type head for compression and coolant flow

Beadlocks and tires

stainless brake lines

First thing I'd do is get the front suspension and a rear shock, along with the portwork and pipes.  Then, gear up and that'll get you rolling soft and fast.  Then as you can, add in the other pieces.  There's a million other things, but that's a good general start.

thats a pretty good summary id say get some elkas up front and rear too

scratch the t5's,id get some inframe drag pipes if it were me , i d also gear way up like a 16 or 17 front sprocket ,get some engine ice coolant for the high temps, and ru nan outerware and billet filter plate too.
