gd97
I just installed a Ricky Stator adjustable timing plate on my 97 shee and set it at + 4 deg. We went on a ride today and it ran like crap. That is the only thing that I did to the motor. It seems to start fine when cold but after riding for a few minutes it won't idle or run unless it is wide open. It has always started on the first kick hot or cold before. I also checked the pick up and it is set at .010" . It also would bog pretty bad when I would rev it to keep it running. When it would die on me if I waited a few minutes it would start right up and would run good for a few then start acting up again. The rest of the motor mods is Cool head with 18 cc domes,Weisco pistons, T-5 pipes, uni air filter,Jetted . I run it on 110 octane race gas with yamalube 2-r mixed at 40:1.This thing has always ran great until this mod. Could the High compression with the advance be too much? mud91
Trying putting back to stock setting. See how it runs then.
Rare Scottish Tree Badger
Trying putting back to stock setting. See how it runs then. 395950[/snapback] My first thoughts too. Then try gradually advancing 1 degree at a time. ... 18cc domes will be giving you a lot of compression unless you're high in altitude. Keep in mind that in advancing timing you're improving bottom end at the loss of top end. Rare.
gd97
That is the first thing that I was going to try when I get a chance. That is why I am baffled because I thought it would help on the bottom.
gd97
Tore my shee down today to replace the clutch and found out I had no coolant. I had checked it a week before and it was fine. Could it have been running hot and causing my problem? I can't seem to find any places where it looks like it was leaking but when I get the clutch done I will fill it back up and try to find it and hope there is no damage. At least I didn't have any in the tranny oil when I drained it.

Fingers crossed for you that the 110 octane saved the motor from detonation. Rare.
gd97
Yea it had very little, The good thing was it didn't take it long to get hot and I let it sit and cool down and did not keep riding it so hopefully everything is ok.

At higher RPMs...the sooner the spark, (Advance) the sooner it can light off the mixture and make power. It should make more power on top than bottom. I can see with extra compression (18cc domes) sacrificing a little power on top...but not timing.

dajogejr
Very good info there. I wasn't talking about too much timing, however...which, I can clearly see your point! I knew 0 was really in the 15 degree ball park (sorry...haven't read my bible in a while) My bud just got the dyna for his 450R. Said it made it a whole new animal. Between that, a ported head and 14:1 comp piston, I might have my hands full this weekend... Honestly...though, you are correct. You are taking more of the "extreme" side of this than I am...though. Nonetheless...this is very, very good info for all to share. Nice write up. (I think mine might have seen 2 degrees BTDC a time or two on a missed shift... (That's not directed towards you). Nonetheless...this is very, very good info for all to share. Nice write up. Thanks, I just hope it's correct. Rare.
