MudMachine
hi i am wondering how big of an amp it would take to power two 12inch subs nicely.
bansheeryder_69
Depends on what kind of subs they are and what ohm they run off. For instance a JL w7 takes nearly 1000 watts to push it but a wal mart special 12 will run off of like 100 watt amp. My best guess would be to get a 300 watt amp. RNBRAD
I would say 200 to 300 watt amp should be perfect.
MudMachine
the subs are kicker and i belive they are 4 ohm
RNBRAD
the subs are kicker and i belive they are 4 ohm 393279[/snapback] If you have the round kicker versus the square "L" series, you will be fine anywhere from 200 to 300 watts. There is little if any to gain in output from a kicker 12'' sub beyond 100 watts.

23champ
WOW, if RNBrad is right, it don't sound like you'll need much more than a high end Pioneer head unit! Them bitches must be efficient! Good Luck. I'd prolly throw anywhere from 800 to 1000 watts at em.
RNBRAD
Yea I'd throw more power at the L7's, just because there is more to gain from them, they have more x-max or cone excursion. I'd run a good 250 watts to each of them. An example of my previous post concerning the round 12's. You can find the "dyno graph" output sheet on pretty much any sub if you do some searching on the net. One example was the Kicker XPL 12'' sub, it gained less than 1.5db's going from 100 watts to 400 watts. Hardly worth the extra cost for the power. That is not even audible. Some useless info to most but something to think about when amp shopping for subs. BTW: big difference between a good 100 watt amp and a 100 watt head unit. sredish
A Kicker L7 takes 750 RMS and 1500 Peak Watts. L7s really like the power. PER SPEAKER, 400 watts will power one okay, but it has to be a 400 watts RMS amp not a 400 watts peak. 400 watts peak will only give it about 200 to 250 RMS and it won't be near enough. That is per speaker, so you need to double that for running two. Ideally, a 1500 watt RMS amp will be perfect, and they'll hit really really hard. At minimum, I'd look for a 800 to 1,000 watt RMS amp at 2 ohms and they should sound good. You can find some really good deals on Ebay for Rockford Fosgate 1001bd or 1501bd amps. For instance : RF 1001bd AMP. It's rated at 1,000 watts at 2 ohms and probably pushes close to 1,200. It's at $150. I run two of these exact amps, and they kicks serious ass. But... I have two subs with one of these amps on each one. For running the one amp to two subs, you'll have to divide that number, so the two L7's will see maybe 550 to 600 watts, which will work well. A lot of new amps are rated in RMS, but be sure to verify that.
