NMSHEE
My tranny has some weird problems, it only has 5th gear, 1-4 are bound up, you can shift in to these gears and it locks up. And there is no nutral. 6th gear is also locked up. Any ideas on whats wrong? Thanks
itsaripper
The first thing that come to mind is one of the shifting forks is broke or bent. That way you are in two gears at once. Drain the oil, and radiator, then take off the clutch side. Shift the trans and watch to make sure the shifting drum is turning. If it is turning that mean the gears are moving on the shafts so something will have gotten inbetween the gears. I have even seen something get inbetween the crank and the clutch gear and lock up everything.
NMSHEE
Ok i tore it all apart and i cant find anything wrong. The forks seem ok and the drum is moving ok. 5th gear is the only free gear, the others are all bound up. And it hard to shift. Could it all be in the drum and forks, or do you think its the shafts? Thanks for your help
80overShee
The dreaded suggestion......."time to split the cases" Take the shafts out and make sure the stationary gears are sliding back and forth on the splines so they lock on the rotating gears (sorry if I don't know the technical terms) If they arent, you may have to disassemble the shafts and find the problem there. If the gears ARE sliding, you have a problem with your forks or drum. Check the star and move it with a pair of channel-locks (carefully!) and make sure it shifts ok. You may have to give the forks a VERY small jiggle to get it to slide without proper lub. If you take your time, there really isnt any reason to be afraid of splitting the cases. I know I was the first time, after I had it apart, I almost think its fun to have it apart (other than for spending $ and not being able to ride). There isn't much to a Banshee tranny, if you tear it apart, its not hard to find problems, there is only really 4 main components. Shift drum, shift forks, and 2 shafts with stationary and rotating gear assemblys. Other than that, everything is contained in the clutch case. But remember.......even if you find the problem, there is ALWAYS a reason it happened, look for the reason, fix the reason rather than the problem or you will be back again. Example... Your clutch is hard to pull. Instead of checking the torque specs on the clutch springs, you adjust the cable or get a longer clutch lever and sooner or later you destroy your entire clutch. Had you just checked and seen taht your springs were torqued too high, you would have saved $... Fix the cause first, or you'll fix the problem again. NMSHEE
I think i found the problem. One of the rotating gears is locked up on the shaft. I think it should rotate.
NMSHEE
Ok on the smaller shaft, the gear right after the smallest gear towards the little bearing, should that gear spin?
80overShee
Ok on the smaller shaft, the gear right after the smallest gear towards the little bearing, should that gear spin? 389871[/snapback] I just torqued/Yamabonded my cases so I can't pull it back apart to check for you and dont remember exactly which are stationary and which are rotating. Best way to check is to put both shafts back in the lower case half lined up on the forks. Notice where the forks slide the gears. If a gear that slides meshes with the gear in question on the same shaft, it SHOULD rotate. The sliding gears are the stationary ones. Although I do believe there is 1 gear amongst them that is an exception. I will try to get around to checkin my Clymers and verify that shortly. I'll also post a few tranny pics on my 'photobucket' sometime tonight or early morning. Look on there and tell me exactly which gear after I upload later if you havent solved the problem. fixitrod
You can also go to www.ronnies.com and look up oem parts. There is a complete diagrahm of every part on the banshee there.
