need help from the Photoshop pros

Recommended Posts

I need some pointers... my friend is opening a shop that does high performance diesels. It is going to be called Smokin' Diesel Performance. I am trying to learn how to make a logo in PS7, but I need some help. I want to use a picture of his truck, with some cool flames in the background and the shops name under the truck. How do I go about doing that? Any help would be really welcomed. Here is a picture of the truck.

have you ever used photoshop before? i dont know what kind of quality hes looking for, but it would be much less time consuming to just hire someone to do it. there are a lot of considerations when it comes to creating a professional logo for a business, inclusing what the logo will be used for, ie. web, print etc. you may be able to pull it off if hes just using it for web purposes, but if he needs it for print, you need to make sure your working in a high resolution, in CMYK color mode, not RGB web colors, and be sure to make the document bigger than youll ever need it printed, because photoshop cant create vector images, so if you enlarge the final product to print, it will distort and lose image quality severely.

oh yea, flames can be tricky. i had never attempted to make realistic flames til just recently when someone from here asked if i could help with graphics for his dragster.

here is my first go at it:

Brooke's right, flames can be really tough to get looking "real" but can be done. Brooke did a hell of a job on the pic above :notworthy:

I threw something together using default formats in Macromedia Fireworks, the flames and font are both pre-loaded designs, nothing fancy on my part. You'll probably notice they look very similar to the pic in my sig  I figured I could throw something together and maybe we can work together to get what you're looking for. :)

That is killer... I have only really done resizing of pictures and a bit of text logos. Is there somewhere online for tutorials? I catch on really fast so learning should go well, but I just need a few pointers. Your flames are awesome. Thanks Brooke.

And there is another name he is looking at and it is Dynamic Diesel Performance.. What sounds better?

because it selects based on color. try using the magnetic lasso tool and tracing slowly around the truck by hand. if you click and hold the lasso tool, a menu should show up with more tools, one will have the lasso and a magnet.

naa doesnt need to be on a new layer. could be a problem with the resolution of the photo vs the resolution of the document youre working on, though, i doubt it. but really, you dont need to copy/paste. just use the move tool and drag the truck from the photo to the document youre working on.

are you resizing the truck once you have it in the document youre working on? that may be it too. if you are resizing it, be sure to hold down the shift key as you drag to resize. that will keep it from distorting by keeping in proportion.
