Advice on a handgun?

Hey whats up guys. I've really been wanting a gun for a while and I've decided to get one. I know I want a handgun, prolly will only get fired at a range because I know they're not the best for home protection (shotguns are though, right) and I need a little advice on what to get. Maybe a 45 or so? What are your favorite guns, tips on buying, good gun VS bad (shitty) gun? Thanks a lot guys.

if you are just putting holes in paper get a 9mm. light recoil and cheap ammo. Glocks are pretty popular expecially their 9mm, good guns Go to a store and handle a bunch of guns and see what fits you best

For "plunking" I'd go with something like a .22 or .25 auto. I love target shooting with a .22 Mostly because it doesn't beat the hell out of me or my wallet.

I LOVE shooting my .44 mag though. Its such a rush I start shaking after about 3 rounds. I haven't shot a .50 yet, but my father in law makes conversions for FAL's to turn them into .50 Beowulf cannons. If things every go my way I plan on getting the whole set of DE guns. The .357 mag and the .50 AE. If I could find a .41 that would be super cool because its the "sister" gun to what I have now, and they don't make them anymore.

 

If you have the cash, check out Magnum Researches site, and that all in 1 kit they have. You get the .357 mag, the .44 mag and the .50 all in one gun. You get all the barrels, and the clips, and one frame. Its like Ron Propeil got ahold of one of these things and made it amazing.

 

They also make something called the Baby Eagle. I think its a .40 or a .45 hand gun as apposed to the hand cannons they are famous for.

I love my Ruger Super Redhawk 44 Mag. Hellofa fun hand cannon. I enjoy it when people jump 2 feet back after I squeeze off a round.

 

Glocks are cool. I had a 17.

Check out the Sig 357 auto. Amazing little gun. Supposedly the most accurate pistol caliber made. They also pack more punch than a 357 magnum shooting a 125 grain bullet.

The Glocks are hard to beat, they are a no nonsense pistol. I have never had one of mine malfunction, and I send a lot of rounds downrange. My personal favorite is my 23, that's in .40 S&W. I also have a 27, also in .40 S&W, for personal carry. I love that little pistol. It packs a hell of a punch, holds 10 rds. with the mag extension, very controllable and conceals nicely. I have a Glock 32 in .357 Sig. That's a hot round, but I am more partial to the .40 S&W. The 17 is cool, but I just don't have a lot of faith in 9mm.

 

But since you just want to plink at the range, a .22 cal. Ruger Mark II would be a nice pistol. Browning makes a super nice .22 cal. pistol called the Buckmark, you can't go wrong with either of those. Neither of them would make good carry pistols if you decide to get a carry permit. I would go with the Glock 27 for a carry pistol.

I have a Glock 22(40 cal) and like it. The Glock is simple, no safety(on the trigger) just pull the slide back and go. I also enjoyed firing a slug out of a shotgun(good jolt to the shoulder though.)

i like the sig sauer great guns . pistols are great for home protection short easy to manuver with out a long barrel getting in the way.i would by a 22 pistol first i have a browning buck mark pistol and i love it.get a good feel on the 22 pistol then move on from there.22 are cheap and lots of fun.when you do get a bigger gun for home protection get some magsafe or similar type of prefragmented bulletts.better take down power and you dont have to worry about your shots going through walls hitting innocennt people.the magsafes are alot lighter than regular slugs and are packed with little bbs that spread upopn impact making a larger wound.they cost quite a bit more than hollow points but thats one area ill spend more money on in a heart beat.i didnt like the glock i want a real saftey i can engage.i had to pull the trigger to hard maybe with some trigger mods id like it more, thats why i like double action pistols you can cock the hammer for a lighter trigger pull.if you want a smaller gun to pack around i have a stainless walters ppk in .380 nice gun and i like the saftey design on the gun every gun should be setup that way and its the gun james bond packs around .but for sure buy a 22 pistol first and learn the basics.and check around the indoor gun ranges alot of them will rent guns for you to try out.

one more thing to think about do you have a wife or girlfriend living with you?if so make sure to get a gun she can use incase your not there not many girls i know can shot a 44mag nor would i use anything that big at home or get her own hand gun like a 32 ladysmith made just for the girls.make sure she knows how to operate the gun also.

like someone mentioned before, some places you can actually rent guns and try them out. first, i'd consider which type of handgun you desire (revolver, single action auto, double action auto, double action only auto, glock)

target shooters prefer single action auto's due to the light trigger pull. 9mm is a nice target round because it's cheap and has very little recoil

i'd consider just holding some guns and see what feels comfortable in your hands. a double-stacked .45 magazine makes for an awful bulky grip that's just a tad too big for my hand. once you find some comfortable guns, close your eyes and point the gun as if you were gonna shoot it. open your eyes and see how far off the muzzle is from where you thought it would be. guns have different grip angles, which is another reason i didn't get a glock. you want something that's natural to your hand and grip.

 

myself, i have a sigp220 .45, and a sigp239 .40SW, but I bought them to carry, not target shoot.
