Banshee a trail worthy machine?

Recommended Posts

We bought a banshee about 2 years ago then i switched to a yfz but my dad still rides the banshee and up until a month ago he liked it until my uncle bought a kfx 400 and he kills my dad in the trails. Hes thinkin about goin +2+1 a arms +2 swinger and +2+2 axle with some works shock and a 2-1 carb setup. Its been ported out but it mihgt be a lil to much for trails and bored .20 over. Thinkin about buyin a set of virgin cyclinders and sending them off and done right. You think it will be worth it all or go with a 4-stroke?

The bike itself is already built/fast enough to beat that 400.

You're simply using a suspenson design/chassis design that originated in 87 (or 89...really, minus the J Arm)....

Think about how good shocks and forks were on an 87 RM, YZ, KX or CR....then, take a look at a new(er) one.

If the shee is paid for...he loves the motor, and doesn't mind spending a few thousand dollars to revamp the whole suspension system...then, it's a good idea.

If not...a piped 450R or YFZ should hand it to that 400.

Keep in mind...is it the rider or the quad?

Drag race...the shee should smoke it.

There is no argument that a newer, more updated chassis stock vs. stock is going to beat a shee in tight trails...

A good rider can only make up for so much...

You don't need a 2 into 1 carb setup...either. Unless the port job is the worst in mankind...just get an adjustable timing plate and a lightened flywheel. Set the plate at +4...

That will give it the easy power for the trails...

suspension definately and make a rebuild, with a new port job. if he rides tight trails, stock or +1+1 a arms with new shocks. open trails, +2+1 arms with new shocks. you dont want to go too wide to where you cant fit through the trails.I dont think a wider axle would be desireable in trails either. I believe with a stock length axle and longer a-arms, its easier to pitch around. you dont want a longer swingarm in the trails, shorten your stock swingarm -2. instead of wheelspin you will get mad traction because your putting weight over the rear tires. as for a port job, I hear the Eric Gorr port is a good woods port for about $200. 2 in 1 carb would help with low end while increasing top end also, sredish may chime in on that one. He ran a 2 in 1 setup with his fattys and loved it. what kind of pipes is he currently running?

in really tight woods and trails, a 4 stroke is going to be way easier to ride compared to a shee. sure you can do it but its more work to ride a shee.

4 strokes have lots of low end torque, and are good at puttin around.

shee can do it but really like to be opened up

I love my shee in the trails but you have to RIDE IT !!, always working the clutch, gears and throttle, but if you ask me thats half the fun sittn your ass on a auto v-force.....BORING!!!!!!.. The banshee has torgue, you just have to be in the meat of the powerband to use it.

Having said that suspension mods are a must and I'm surprised no one mentiond tires, they play a huge part in traction and acceleration!

Besides last I looked this was banshee HQ, I dought youll find people pushin 4-jokes!

Peace!

I like the banshee on the trails cause you get the rear wheels spinning and you can power slide almost anything and when they're spinning up a hill you really don't have to worry about wheelieing over. I recently took it to the trails for the first time and was killing z-440s and crf 450s and even a crf 230! anyway it also depends on the rider, a banshee is just balls to the walls when you ride :headbang:

Sorry...it might just be me...but if I'm riding up a slippery hill...I want tractable power, not wheel spin. That's a recipe for disaster....

With the right tire/suspension combo and clutch use...you can cut down on wheel spin quite considerably.

Remember...he's getting smoke by the uncle on a four stroke...spinning tires around turns isn't going to help that. Sure, it is fun as all hell...:)

If you're spinning, you're not going forward...

I'd take a good four stroke if ALL I did was ride tight, twisty trails. Hell, I'd probably go 4X4 Cadillac style. but, for open, fast trails and drag....I'll keep my shee, thank you very much!!

It can be made into a "Better" trail machine...just like it can be made into a drag bike, MX'er, Flat track...etc.

Like anything else, how deep are them thar pockets.

I ride mostly wooded trails (some of them are very tight) and my Banshee does great! I have large tires on the back and have geared it down. I can literally crawl through the tight sections where even the four stokes are just grunting through. Then when I hit the more open trails I can still open her up and scream past all the tractors (non-sport ATV's) out there. If you want, you can make a Banshee do most anything. :headbang:

With enough money the Banshee can make a great trail bike. And what's up with the screen name, shee-male?J/K Figure out how much it would cost to do the shee compaired to buying a new bike.

Why you gotta be like that ?

This is BansheeHQ raptor man

Depends on what kind of trails you ride. Open ones...with hills...get the extended.

Short, tight and twisty...that extended doesn't turn as well as a stock or shortened one...no disputing that.

This whole post boils down to what exactly you want to do...and how much time and money you want to spend.

Shit...if I had the money...I'd have both...a nice 4 stroke to relax and ride trails on, and a hopped up shee for racing and fast, open trails....

It's hard to make one quad do everything, though..just like it's hard to get everything out of a banshee powerband....:)

In my experience it has been better to have an extended swingarm.  Some trails have some awfully steep hills and having a short swingarm may make going up a little scary.

some people climb hills with shortened swingarms, i dont think it would be a problem. what kind of porting and pipes does your dad have now? for the trails u would want a mild port that produces a smooth powerband.
