What mods to do

Hey guys how are you? I am new here and also just purchased my first banshee. It is a 1997 with toomey T5 pipes, cool head w/ 16cc domes, weisco pistons .020 over, and a uni air filter. It also has a jet kit.Reeds and everything else is stock. I was wondering what mods, even if it means changing the things already done would be the best to do. I mostly trail ride and hill climb in the woods but I like to fly on flat ground whenever I can.I would like to just do bolt ons first and not crack open the motor untill it needs freshened up.I also am going to need a cluch basket and pressure plate because mine is pretty worn. Thanks for any info.

2 into 1 35mm carb, ported, -2 swinger, front shocks, pro flow filter. do you like your t5's in the trails? their are other pipes out their that would suit you more in the trails, but if the t5's are what you like stick with them. -2 swinger would help you with traction. but if u hill climb im not to sure, i never heard of anyone climbing with a -2 swinger, maybe a -1 would be better, any input out their guys? 2 into 1 carb would help out with low end and increase top end. porting will open her up more, giving you more power. front shocks help out with suspension, giving you a smoother easier ride. pro flow foam filter for maximum air flow, since the stock air filter setup is crap. the pro flow setup utilizes a airbox adapter for the air filter to directly clamp on to, so you wont have to worry about it falling off. coast about 100 bucks, comes with a filter that you must use for the adapter (its larger). thats all i could think .

Thanks for the reply. I think the T5's might be a little more top for the trails but they were on it when I bought it so I really don't have anything to compare them to.I was definately thinking about a 2 into 1 carb and another air cleaner. What pipes is the best for all around? This thing has a wicked hit but it seems to all be on top.

yeah with t5's you wont like them in the trails, so get ready to clutch alot to stay in the powerband. if you ride open trails that's different, but if u were riding tight trails, i wouldnt recommend t5's. best all around pipes, their are a few out there, fattys seem to be the most popular. real good low end, with awsome mid range, and a good top end without sacraficing anything. you could also get a port job to increase the performance, you will really like your banshee then. i hear t5's respond to the eric gorr port really well, gives u some low end while keeping that top end of the pipes, and only for 200 bucks, and the 2 into 1 carb will help your low end even more.

:yank: on the 2-1 carb. Only reason to get one of those is if you're changing your jets out all the time, and constantly pulling the carbs etc etc.

Sell the Toomey's and find a nice used set of LRD's. I sold the fatty's on my second shee and put LRD's on that as well. You wont find a better pipe for in the woods, and it'll give you all the low end you'll ever want.

Other mods:

vforce2's or boyeson dual stage reeds (reeds are 40, vforce are 200) will improve throttle response greatly over stock

where you live?, the 16cc compression is way to much if your lower than 2000 above sea level. Drop some 20 or 21cc domes in there. That high of compression is just gonna tear your top end apart.

Get a pro flow foam kit, or a K&N with a pre filter, and then get an outerwears to go over your air box. Either way, ditch the air box lid.

advance your timing +4 (ricky stator plate 35 bucks, and a flywheel puller 10)

After that your running out of bolt ons, other things to look into:

Clutch kit (do a search for fast racing on here, he has a killer clutch kit)

true and welded crank (gonna need it when you start getting those hp numbers up there)

Porting (Jim at passion or Dan at patriot, here some others on here as well, do a search)

Taperbored 30mm carbs

and last but not least SUSPENSION. I'm running +2 +1 with inset rims. Keeps my width in and still gives me the travel. I'm putting a -1 swingarm on as well to get rid of some of the tire spin.

Go this route and you'll have a killer woods shee. I'm halfway there and I can tear ass through anything that is thrown at me, ride around out of powerband all day long (basically rode in 4th and 5th following around a bunch of 400ex's to conserve on fuel the whole time I was at Hatfield-McCoy 2 weeks ago)

I can scream up hillclimbs in powerband in 2nd and 3rd gears, or just walk up them out of powerband in 1st and sometimes 2nd (depending on how technical it is)

I love the pipes, for woods riding, I wouldnt run anything else. Hear PT mids are comparable, but the 1 person I've talked to over the last 5 years that has ridden both pipes, likes the LRD's better. Not to mention you can adjust where the powerband comes on in the rpm band so you can sit in the torque curve right outside powerband and have all the torque and power you want to be able to do anything.

I do alot of hillclimbing and trail riding and my setup is spectacular for all-around and is very fast too.

The key to my motor is a wiseco hotrods longrods crank. This transformed my motor into a little less of a revver, but it still gets the revs up and is easy to lug it and short shift it. I also have a set of t5's, 28mm PWK's w/ pods, A Cool-Head with 18cc domes, delta v-force II reeds. On the ignition side, I the timing advanced +4. This setup allows me to run a 15 tooth front sprocket with a stock size 89 rear sprocket. I have trail rode it and the 15 can be a little fast for tighter trails and I find myself clutching alot, but switching to a 14 front would make that easier. I have also raced a bunch of raptors, 450rs and the like and they cant hang. I like the motor for its rideability and all around power. It has great low and mid power and softens the hit but still pulls like a muther on top.

If you want any more info let me know.

Stock size rear sprocket is 42 not 89. Good luck on your shee

Thanks alot for all the info. I will start with getting my clutch taken care of then maybe try to get the domes changed and get some reed cages and the filter kit. I would like to get away from having to run race gas all the time anyway.

Yeah i realize that, I mean its the stock sprocket size for and 89 shee.

Also, I dont reccomend pod filters for any situation where there is water unless you are careful. A nice custom system to set it higher up for better protection or the stock airbox with the prodesign kit and no lid is preferable.

Tell you what...you need a few cheap mods to have all the trail shee you'll need, and still have a good top end for opening up on flat ground.

Contact boonman. Have him lighten your flywheel. Also have him send you a new, modded factory shift star, and have him mill your head .020 to .030...depending on your elevation. He can tell you.

Then, get yourself a Ricky Stator adjustable timing plate for 35 bucks plus shipping.

Honestly...

All of these mods will be less than 200 bucks shipped.

I've got 'em all BUT the shaved head (soon, very soon) and going from a stock flywheel shee to a lightened one with +4 of timing made a WORLD of difference. It smoothed out the hit of the T5s...and since the motor will rev faster, you make power faster...it almost removes that banshee low end lug.

Try these mods...I promise you'll have a better trail shee...and it'll still rip in a race.

I have stock gearing in mine...but, in a drag race 1st gear winds out too quickly...so, I ordered a 15 to let it pull a bit longer....and hopefully cut down on wheel spin just a bit.

OOPS...just reread that, forget the milled....16cc domes? Geez...what elevation are you at...or...you're using RACE gas...right?
