rear shock dampening

i just picked up an 02' banshee, barely used. it has sat in a garage

from march 2002 until yesterday, may 2005 - i picked it up for a good

price...but, it is not running right. my questing here is that when i push

down on the rear end, for the first 3 - 5 inches the only stiffness i feel

is the coil on the shock - it's like there is no air or oil in the shock - it springs

back up really quick, unless i put all my weight on it, then there is some

dampening - any ideas, maybe it is supposed to be like this, but it sure

feels soft...it really bounces when i am kicking it over to start - anyhelp

would be great - i am just getting into this! jOeb

That sound exactly the same way as mine's been behaving since I had a high speed crash wacking the dogbone off a boulder at about 60mph. I thought it was just because the dogbone was bent, but I replaced that and it's still the same. ... If you push down on the grab bar quickly by about 4 or 5 inches and let go, does it come back up with a KLONK? ... I'll be interested to hear what anyone has to say about this one.

I just assumed that I'd wrecked mine in the crash and I just won a replacement on eBay tonight. Apart from the klonking, the adjustment systems didn't seem to be very positive (one of them didn't click at all), so a replacement was needed anyway.

Rare.

are you guys talkinmg about the compression or rebound. if your rebound is set to slow it wil be very slow coming back to the normal length

I guess we're talking about both. ... We're both finding that the only suspension effect is in the spring for the first 4 or 5 inches of (grab bar) travel.

we are talking about both compression and rebound. the compression is very soft, easy to push down for the first 5 inches, and rebound back from those 5 inches is quick with a KLONK sound, if i push it down all the way then there is dampening - any ideas?

Hav you adjusted compression ( "clicker" on resivoir? ) and rebound ( bottom of shock ) to max settings? or adjusted them at all?

I just went out and had a look at mine. ... Compression, clicker on res., seems to make a difference softer/harder. But the rebound only has about 7 clicks on it before it gets tight (clockwise, upwards towards the spring). In this position I get the 'klonking' return. ... If I turn the adjuster down from this position by 7 clicks, it still has the klonking rebound. From here on down it just spins with no clicks until it goes tight at the bottom. In this position the back end doesn't come back up with the klonk.

:shrugani: , but I've got a replacement on it's way.

I'd say in both your cases that the seals went bad. That means the oil the shock uses for compression and rebound dampening has leaked out. I've had this happen twice over the last ten years. All you have to do is have the shock rebuilt and it'll be good as new. Better if you have them revalved with an aftermarket valving kit. Some aftermarket shock dealers recommend having the shocks rebuilt once per year just as maintenance.
