Been lookin to upgrade from my 2003 Ranger. Thought about Fords, 150 or 250, but stopped by the chevy dealer the other day and really like the 2500 HD crewcab. It had the 6.0L, 4x4, auto, and some nice creature comforts I'm lacking now. Also, they had installed 6" lift and shiney wheels, bigger tires. If I would have drove it, it would have followed me home I'm sure.

OTHER THAN FLAMING ONE BRAND OR THE OTHER, anyone have personal experience with new or newer GM products?

I hear they fixed the piston slap issue, and haven't heard anything about brakes on the new rigs. And as truck consumers in general, we are all screwed as far as tranny's go, unless you opt for the Allison/duramax, which is outa my range.

Thoughts?

I have an 02 HD with a 6.0 and have no problems at all. the 4L80 is a good transmission if your not pulling the world with it. Sometimes I wish I had the 8.1 with the allison but then I see gas prices decide the old 6.0 is just fine. The brakes are 100% better than the 98 and earlier trucks.

I would pass on that truck. I just traded in a 2002 Chevy K2500 4x4 with the 6.0L for a 2005 F250 with the Powerstroke. The Ford is a way better truck. It turns sharper which make parking much easier. It rides smoother, feels tighter, seems smaller (in a good way), and isn't blown around on the road as much.

The diesel gets way better mileage, of course, but the 6.0L GM motor is really thirsty. I averaged about 11 mpg. It is a strong motor for only 364 cu in. But it can't compare to the diesel, except for the sound. The GM 6.0L had piston slap so bad that it sounded like a diesel whenever it was started. Sometimes it would even do it at idle when the engine was warm. It never really idled smoothly. Both of these are common problems for the GM 6.0L.

Other problems that almost all late model GMs have are: tailgate strap breakage, loose steering shaft (which causes vibration and noise), slip yoke binding, sticky throttle body, and the new brake recall. I don't mean to be GM bashing here, but along with the piston slap, these are problems that almost all of my friends have had with their GMs. From as far back as 1999 to 2004. I can understand a few problems with a newly designed truck, but GM should have fixed these in a year or two. They definately should have been fixed by 2002!

Both trucks have top of the line, leather interiors, and I have to admit that the Chevy interior was a little nicer, but that is the only thing that I liked better about the Chevy.

I'll never buy another full size truck with a gasoline engine. Even though the diesel cost $5000 more. It will pay for itself in fuel savings and resale value. Plus it has the kind of power that puts a smile on my face.

Good luck with your purchase!

I second that. I have 2 of them and will never go without one.

I also love the interiors on Chevy/GMC trucks the best, but the power of my Cummins is awesome. I also have already had to get the tranny upgraded thanks to Dodge, the stocker crapped out coming home from Glamis.

Get what you like and can afford, they all have their good and bad points.

I always thought dodge quad cabs were a little tight, especially in the back seat, but you cant knock the cummins, or the 'stroke....fords are comfy, I like the one of ours, and our chev with a duramax is like cruising a caddy, really nice, damn tight....

I will always stand by this saying....

Its not whatcha got on the hood, Its what your willing to do underneath it!

i like my 2001 dodge cummins. its got an auto even and i have pulled my 20 foot enclosed on several trips now loaded with 5 quads and no problems. fords are alright and chevy would be my very last desperate choice.
