Capone
ok, after studying the pics a bit, from what I can see it looks like your wring spun, and caught the exhaust port. the gap in the wring isn't supposed to be against your exhaust port, should be to the side of it. Excessive wall clearance? I can only see 1 gap in the pictures posted, just some ideas for ya.. good luck.
racer
did you put your ungloved hand on the head before you hammered on it? it looks like a 4 corner seizure to me.
fixitrod
Since you have the piston in hand check this page and compare... http://www.mztech.fsnet.co.uk/workshop/wrk_piston.html I think you got an air leak or lack of fuel in that cylinder. That caused the rest of the damage after the melt down. What octane was that sunoco. Was it pump gas. Does the other piston show any heat damage... even under the crown.. like black marks underneath. I think its the burn hole one in the pics on that page. Edited April 26, 2005 by fixitrod
sheefreak
I've gotta agree w/ Rod. If you were positive of your jetting, then something got lodged in the main jet, or an airleak started somewheres to change that condition.
bigscary
You have gotten enough posts on Planet Sand to help you with your problem... one word of advice though... Listen to Calvin since he's the one that makes those cylinders. Did you happen to warm it up before you hammered the throttle? 360545 yes I warmed it up well b4 every run..... Also looks like the intake sides of the piston were trying to stick as well. Either lean mixture, air leak , clogged jet caused this. 220 lbs compression didnt help things either. Check the carbs, gaskets and drop the compression to something more reasonable...it might hit harder on the bottom with that much compression but it is almost certainly played a part in this and is probably slowing you down on top-end.....Jim
joshv5.0
its an airleak. the same thing hapened to me from detonation the piston starts fusing its self to the dome on the head. this is what mine looked like this is also what happened
bigscary
after reading all of the coments, heres my theory...... the left plug vibrated out........and it continued to run cor about 1-2 seconds..... sucking air through the crankcase into the right cylinder.......leaning the hell outa it......(Melt down begins) it made it about 2 more runs b4 completely locking up...... bigscary
anytime i ran over 185 psi i ran a plug lock....best $20 i spent. 361494 so yours vibrated out without detonation?
bogart
i would also say major detonation there.clogged carb air leak its all been said.ive seen many melted pistons with turbo charged cars.just look at all the flaakes of piston.i bet it cracked it then gave her hell inside there. Whitey
That definitely looks like a cracked ringland cause by detonation. The piece of piston that fell off did a number on the heads.
sheefreak
I had a plug back out last year on me w/ stock compression. Thank god only thing that happened is I fouled a plug. But I was running a little on the lean side.
lincster
You never did say your jetting, just that you were fat. How do you know? I would say airleak also, or lean jetting. What octane is the gas?
