New here and Have a broken banshee

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. I have an 01 banshee that I bought with a bad rod bearing. That is what the kid told me at least. Last night I tear the engine down and the right piston has a hole in it and I can see some metal shavings that have fallen down. The quad is completely stock except for a boost bottle so I am unsure why the piston has a hole in it. There is a shop by my house that told me to turn the engine upside down in a solvent tank to get the metal shavings out. Do you think it would be a better idea to just replace the rod bearings and start new or have this dropped in a solvent tank. I am very mechanically inclined but if I need to get the bearings pressed off the crank that is something I can't do. Where is the cheapest place to get the bearings.

Thanks Steve

 WELCOME 2 THE HQ!!!

as far as your problem

1. Get an Clymer Manual

2. hole in the piston = detonation

3. You just want to slap it back 2gether or do it RIGHT

Well I want it to at least last one season of riding. I would say do it right but when doing it right does that mean an aftermarket crank. The quad like I said is stock and I would like to leave that way for now. How hard is it to remove the crank. I already have the engine on the workbench but I was worried if I take off the lower cover will that screw up the transmission.

Thanks for the welcome and advice

If you get a clymers manual it's step by step. You'll want the torque specs anyway. If you already took the motor out, it's a piece of cake really.

Take it out, send it to tdr. tony doukas racing and pay for a rebuilt crank. It sure is a good time to put a 4mm stroker crank in there.

Anyway, then send the cyliders to passion racing and have him bore the cyinders and get you a piston kit with gaskets and a seal kit for the motor.

Inspect the tranny bearings while you have it apart.

If you have some money and want to make it fast it's the perfect time to do it. Otherwise you may never find a reason to tear the motor down again.

Okay, for stock the way it is.

Have the crank looked at by tdr. You may pay shipping but it's worth it. If the cranks fine you might have $30 to $50 into it. Problem is ... when a crank bearing fails it takes the bore, piston, rings and head with it. Make sure to have the crank looked at by someone who knows what they are doing.

There use to be a web site called thebansheezone.com that had a step by step on splitting the cases but it's shut down right now.

You will not mess up the tranny by splitting the cases. Get a clymers manual though. Really. There is a lot of good info and it will pay for itself.

I will definatly get a clymer for the banshee, I have one for my fzr and tl1000s, so I will get one. Just getting too one is a pain around my area. I will have the crank looked at by a guy that owns a shop by my house. He is supposed to be really good with banshees. Like I said when I bought the quad it was supposed to have a blown rod bearing but after taking it apart it might have been just firing on one cylinder because the hole in the piston. I am just worried about getting the lower end cleaned enough to last one season. I only paid 1200 for a 01 banshee in great condition.

Thanks Steve

He probably had an air leak that burned a hole in that piston. Replace the crack seal, shift shaft seal, kick starter seal and whatever other seals come in the kit. Don't forget to fill the lips of the seals with grease. Makes them last much longer.

You'll get more than one season out of it if you do it right. If the cranks fine you won't have to put much into it at all. If it needs a crank add $350 to $400 to the project. Check the carb boot for cracks too. Air could have came in there.

Pistons arone $180

Bore and hone $50 for both at passion

Seals $25 - $30

Gasket set $25

yamabond $6.00

New coolant and trany oil
